How do you buy a crossbow?

I quit bowhunting years ago, so when I got drawn for PI, I decided to buy a crossbow. I'm looking for one under $400. Every single model I look at has a bunch of reviews mentioning broken limbs after 20 shots, poor machining, broken strings, etc. Can you buy a quality crossbow under $400? Any brands to absolutely avoid? I've been looking mostly at Barnett, PSE, and Killer Instinct so far.

I bought a Barnett 5 years ago ($300) and it's been perfect. A friend bought a Barnett that is a step up from mine and it's been perfect. (>$400)

Wicked Ridge by Tenpoint may be in your price range. I have owned two (2) Tenpoint Crossbows and they have performed flawlessly and have been durable.

I bought a Killer Instinct Boss 405 package this year for 299.99. So far it's pretty accurate, and I had it zeroed in just a few shots. Haven't got to shoot at anything other than targets yet, but I'm liking it so far.

I have a Wicked Ridge and it is great. Very accurate. Reasonable priced.

I bought a new one last yr with auto cocker from bass pro right after heart surgery. It has the autococker. Deadly accurate. I shot it about 2 dozen times and picked my compound backup and started hunting. I paid 380.00. I will sell it to you for 200.00z sitting in the box it came in

I've heard several talk about how the Excalibur is a good one. I just don't have any personal experience with one.

ArcheryTalk's classified pages has a cross bow section. Those guys buy the latest and greatest every year and sell off the previous yrs models for cheap. I've seen them sell $2,000 setups for $500 and it barely be a yr old.

I have a Barnett Raptor FX and it's been great. Think I gave somewhere around $350 for it.

I look at fps more than anything else first. Anything under 350fps I wouldn't buy

Looks like both Bass Pro Shops in Memphis have some at the sale price. I may go that route. I have around $500 in BPS gift cards I need to use. What kind of effective range do you expect?
