I've caught a few walleye and sauger like that, may be something that occurs in perch family.

One out of 100 or so is probably pretty close on sauger and walleye. Ive caught a smallmouth like that before.

I have caught largemouth and smallmouth like that. In fact I caught the same fish a month after catching it the first time. I only knew because it was like that. No clue how "common" it is or what causes it though.

That's common enough, happens mostly when there is a deficiency in ascorbic acid. A lot of times is due to low dissolved oxygen while the fish is in the larval stage. I think of catfish which are cavity spawners and can really see where D.O. can get low

I have caught and saw several smallmouth and spotted bass with that condition. I don't think that I have ever seen one over 1.5lbs if that.

I have caught a crappie like that before. It was a funny looking filet and the spine was even stranger looking. It's the only one I have caught like that that I can recall
