how big a hassle is getting rifles from CMP

I drove down to the CMP store in Anniston with some buddies, and it was very cool. We got there when it opened for the day so we could pick from a full selection. I picked a service grade HRA, and couldn't be happier. It was very cool to pick the one you wanted from hundreds of garands. I am military, so I just had to show my I.D. to buy. If you take it home from there, you pay alabama sales tax, or ship it to your house for cheaper. The CMP has some good forums for all the info you need.

CMP is a great organization, any proof of firearms training will qualify you for purchase.

Prices range from $525 for a rack grade on up to collectors grades. Even the rack grades can provide you a very good Garand. Just be sure to take a muzzle gauge with you or get one from the counter when you get there and check out the bore. You can break down the rifles at the counter, no parts changing allowed.

In the past year besides the Garands, they have had Krags, 1903's and 1917's. Most of those other than Garands are turn ins from AL and VFW chapters as well as other organizations that were given these for ceremonial purposes.

They had Kimber 82Gs last year and occasionally other competition .22s.

I expect delivery today of 2 AFPG Garands today that I purchased at Anniston last week. Like a kid waiting for Christmas.

Garands can be addicting. Anyone with any interest at all in these weapons should spend a day at Anniston,(CMP South Store).

If you don't want to make the trip, go on CMP's web site, find the grade you want, and print off the applications and send them in, the guide for filling out the forms can be found at the site, also they have an excellent forum site where you can get all the info you want on these weapons. There are some serious firearms experts at the forum site.

Per the CMP home page, you must be a member of a CMP affiliated organization to purchase firearms, and that requirement cannot be waived.

If you have some information from CMP that says otherwise, please post it up. Personally I don't see why a DD214 isn't sufficient, but that only satisfies the marksmanship requirement.

DD214 would satisfy the marksmanship requirement as well as any LE weapons training, I believe completion of a hunter safety course also meets this requirement.

Current and retired military and LE or membership in any of the veteran organizations would meet the club requirements, also membership in the GCA(Garand Collectors Association) meets this requirement.

The GCA is a really good group, with their quarterly magazine that is worth the $25 membership fee and you can request they send your membership info directly to CMP which will immediately meet the club membership requirement.

Can you have it shipped to your house if you don't have an FFL? I would like to have a Garand - my dad is military so I would take him along. Is there a way to know when they are going to get a shipment in of these?

You do all your paperwork at the store and they will ask if you are taking it with you or if you want it shipped. Shipping is $25 and all purchases are shipped out the following Monday on overnight delivery.
Alabama sales tax has to be collected if you are carrying the item with you, that's 10%. You can save several dollars by having it shipped, the down side is waiting for the FEDEX truck to arrive.
No FFL is needed.

Sweet! Thanks for the explanation Cat. How do you know when a shipment or something is coming in?

FEDEX will call the day before delivery, and you will receive an email from CMP advising your order is being processed. This is if you place a mail order. It seems mail orders are taking 3 or 4 weeks from the time you submit the order. Not sure about this time frame since the last time I ordered by mail was last fall when the 1903s became available. As I said earlier if you purchase at the CMP, they will ship over night shipping the following Monday.

Yes CCW is accepted as well as proof of successful completion of a hunter safety course, if actual firing took place.
