You get an invite to hunt a swamp in LA for hogs. Rifle hunt. Visibility will be under 50 yards on average. Basically you will be walking "ridges that are about 12" above water with sloughs that are 6" - 3' deep running parallel between ridges.
Strategy is to sneak n peek through thick and nasty palmetto thicketts and try to blast a hog before it sees/smells you and tears off across the sloughs (which is common)

Which gun do you go for.

1. Marlin 30-30 lever cranker with simmons 44mag 3-9x40 scope. 170gr round nose coreloks.

2. Borrow friends flat top AR in .308 with a burris 3-10x40 scope. Shooting handloads with premimum bullets.

I'm thinking at 50 yds and under there isn't a huge advantage to either one.

Opinions?

I'd borrow the AR and take the scope off. I think you would benefit from the semi auto more than the lever action.

I would take the lever rifle,,the AR10 is way to heavy to tote around and jump shoot hogs with,,a ghost ring sight or an Eotech would be nice,

I wondered about the weight of the AR.

I think the ultimate hog smacker is a 12 ga with a slug followed by a 3.5" buckshot for sneaking and peeking through the swamps.

Trouble is that if you don't knock em down or cause massive bleeding, you will loose the trail as soon as they hit water.

take the marlin. get rid of the oversized scope and get a quality leupold or buris 4x20 or 2.5 x 20 or 2-7x28 scope for it and u r set

i personally would go with the AR pending it has a short barrel, preferably less than 16" but you also cant go wrong with a lever gun since they are tried and true.

Go with the lever gun. This is my 32 special which is similar to a 30-30. Lighter powered scope would be best sounds like.

i like both but take the semi auto just in case you get charged that way you have a little more ammo and a quick reset for the next round to be ready

I forgot. The 30-30 has some feeding issues.

Guess I will see if my buddy will let me bum his AR. :)

Feeding issues and charging pork do not mix!

Nope. One shot and maybe you have an expensive club.

Need to get that in and have it looked at.
