I have all the normal tn deer calibers 270,308,3006. itching to pick up a new caliber what should it be. I would love to go west before my son leaves home in the next few years?

Man, that's a tough one because the three you've listed are about as good or better than any. If it was me, I'd just look at whatever model rifle trips your trigger.

I hear good things about Kimbers, even though Winchester model 70 Featherweights catch my eye.

My choices, should I ever be fortunate enough to make the trip out west for elk, mule deer, etc, are as follows: Remington 300WinMag primary, Winchester Model 70 300WSM backup. And I do load my own. :)

1. Go west to hunt what?
2. Do you reload?
mule deer, elk no I don't reload

Well, you already own calibers that are proven elk killers so you have the "need" part covered. What you are looking at now is a "want" :)

If you are not a reloader, and just want a different caliber than 30-06, I would go with 7mm RM or 300WM. Maybe also check out the 28 and 30 Nosler's , or Weatherby Mags if you want to be a little different but those will be much more expensive to shoot than the 7MM or 300WM.

The Nosler cartridges seem tough to find ammo for. You're pretty much paying a premium for Nosler brand right?

Yep, and I haven't seen any other manufacturers making these cartridges. Performance difference is not worth the hassle in my opinion but it is an option if your just looking for a different caliber.

The 30-06 is my first choice but if I was just wanting a different caliber to be used out west, the 300WM would be my first choice for sure.

I've been intrigued by the 28 nosler. Wonder if they will be a thing of the past soon or stick around?

I do reload so they've been on my radar for a "want" gun.

They're pretty darn trendy over on the western boards.

Same with the 30?
All the Nosler calibers and the 280ai (due mainly to Kimber) are trendy. The Kimber Mountain Ascent is the Hoyt/Mountain Ops/Yeti/Traeger of rifles.

Since you don't reload a lot of "nice to have" chamberings are off limits, BUT, if you were to make the effort to buy up a bunch of ammo way before hunting season starts you can head off any ammo availability problems. One big game cartridge that has always appealed to me is the old 300 H&H Magnum. Particularly the Ruger No 1. I can't think of a better combination of classic cartridge and firearm. Or a No 1 for the 275 Rigby which is just the European name for the old 7x57 Mauser. Having that barrel stamp saying "275 Rigby" conjures up all sorts of images of adventure for me. Sort of like having one of the older Winchester Model 94's barrel stamped "30WCF" rather than "30-30".
