Might sound like a stupid question but what is a preform? I'm 63 and have found arrowheads all my life here in East Tennessee, but I have never heard that term before.
Preforms are late stage bifaces that are ready for notching or stemming into their final shapes, and they don't require further thinning. The last stage would be sharpening the edges of the blade.

For instance, here is a Lost Lake that I made, and a preform for one before notching and sharpening.

This particular preform would be called a Cobbs triangular if left un-notched.
