Was just hunting randomly through the woods this afternoon right in front of one of my shooting houses when I got a hit that was very solid like a half dollar. As I dug in the wet ground I saw this coin fall out of my first dig. Of course, it's always exciting to see a coin fall out of the dirt….especially a big one. As soon as I wiped the back and saw what you see in the second pic I knew it was a large cent and was very excited knowing it was pre Cival War! After a little washing I could see it was 1845! 178 years old!
Theoretically it is old enough that a Cival War soldier could have worn it around his neck as a birth year coin! I'm cleaning it up better now. You can see my shooting house in the last pic.
