Keep at it. Finding the site within the site is the most challenging part of it. And some times it's just luck as to getting the coil over something good. Also...be careful about throwing away stuff you aren't for sure what it is.
Quick story on that subject. My buddy and I were out door knocking one day down in Calhoun, TN trying to find some places to detect. We happened upon a guy in a yard that had just tilled a spot for his garden. Not a large spot. But we thought he might be open to letting us look since the soil was already disturbed. He said to go ahead. My buddy asked me where I wanted to start and I said I'd take the left side and he could take the right, and we'd meet in the middle. We hunted it in no time and I didn't find anything old. We moved on and got permission for another place but didn't find but a couple musket balls at it. At the end of the day, we were throwing our junk into a 5 gallon bucket and showing off the meager goodies...which was just the musket balls. I'd found both of them. My buddy said "you won today...you whipped me. All I found was an old tractor part back in that garden spot" and he held it up and chunked it in the 5 gallon trash bucket. I said "Let me see that again...". He fished it out and lo and behold his trash was a bent 2 piece Confederate belt buckle. A Virginia 2 piece officers buckle to be exact. Even in bent condition it was worth over $1,200 back then.
