Got permission to detect a virgin property! It's been in the same family for over a hundred years (just sold for the first time) and the area of my detecting has an old dug well from probably 75 years ago or longer, an old home place near it and an old shed/barn site. All the structures aside from the dug well structure have beed gone for decades. I'm really excited to see what can be unearthed!

I don't know if I'll get over there tomorrow but Sunday is very likely. It's less than 5 miles from my driveway :)
So fill us in already! Did you get there? What did you find?

My 100 year old supposedly virgin ground was a giant bust. I've been there twice now. I have found 1 whole wheatie and that is it. I found a lid on broken Mason jar and thought "oh boy, this is it, finally found a cache." Nope, nothing else in the hole and no more beeps. What a let down. I hope your permission turns out better.

Found some junk and some little copper thing that I need to clean. Pulled a muscle in my back the next day when I was working on my lawnmower and haven't been back. I'm gonna be looking at 1930s maps to see where the old house was and go from there as soon as I can.

Sucks about the back.

That's a good plan. Check for a Lidar photo. That could tell you more about where to search.

Keep at it. Finding the site within the site is the most challenging part of it. And some times it's just luck as to getting the coil over something good. Also...be careful about throwing away stuff you aren't for sure what it is.

Quick story on that subject. My buddy and I were out door knocking one day down in Calhoun, TN trying to find some places to detect. We happened upon a guy in a yard that had just tilled a spot for his garden. Not a large spot. But we thought he might be open to letting us look since the soil was already disturbed. He said to go ahead. My buddy asked me where I wanted to start and I said I'd take the left side and he could take the right, and we'd meet in the middle. We hunted it in no time and I didn't find anything old. We moved on and got permission for another place but didn't find but a couple musket balls at it. At the end of the day, we were throwing our junk into a 5 gallon bucket and showing off the meager goodies...which was just the musket balls. I'd found both of them. My buddy said "you won today...you whipped me. All I found was an old tractor part back in that garden spot" and he held it up and chunked it in the 5 gallon trash bucket. I said "Let me see that again...". He fished it out and lo and behold his trash was a bent 2 piece Confederate belt buckle. A Virginia 2 piece officers buckle to be exact. Even in bent condition it was worth over $1,200 back then.

I've been too busy on other stuff to get back over there. The 1937 maps of the area show 2 structures, one of which was for sure a home and another that could also be a home. My original search was based on what the property owner told me and I was about a hunnerd yards from where I needed to be. Good news is that they have mowed/bush hogged the property and that's gonna help when I get a minute.
