Got back from camping/fishing at Bull Shoals State park yesterday. Most of the crew fished the White River, and did pretty good catching trout. I don't fly fish that often, so I didn't do that well. They only generated 2 units from the dam, which wasn't too bad for wading, but it was not as good as 1 unit or no generation.
There were quite a few boats on the river thanks to the generation. From what I was told, the river guides like the generation, because the water is up and they can move the boats. Nothing like having seeing the wake from a boat while you're wading in the river.
My brother and I decided to split and go somewhere else. We went to Crooked Creek, which is supposed to be known for smallmouth bass. Talk about off the beaten path, there was NO ONE there. Me and my brother had the river to ourselves. We didn't have to worry about dams generating or boat traffic. I caught 1 redearsunfish, 1 bluegill, 4 smallmouth, some other type of bass (can't remember), and a trout. I used a spinning rod/reel with 1/16 oz black roostertail and caught two small smallmouths, then change to a 1/8 oz grey rooster tail...and caught more fish. My brother was flyfishing and caught some smallmouths and some redear sunfish. He said one smallmouth completely tore up one of his flies, actually to the point of unraveling the thread!
I had been looking for somewhere else to fish if/when the White River starts generating, and I found a place! I'll definitely go back!
