I've posted this on a couple of diff forums here, but just trying to feel out the purchase I made.

I dropped by Academy Sports yesterday and found what I believe to be an awesome deal. A Rem MOd 770 stainless in .243 cal, with the syn stock, and also had the standard Bushnell 3x9x40 scope mounted on it. They were running an ad for their Rem's in 30-06 and .270 for $319.00, but they were blued. I asked if they had them in youth sizes and he said he couldn't find one, and I pointed out the only one I saw that was a youth, and whaddya know, it WAS a .243 and it was marked down to $319.00 as well. He said it was a nice mark down and was most likely done to be grouped with the other blued ones. Heavy barrel and kinda nice imo. I bought it for my daughter. So, did I do good?

You did good. It's a tool for shooting and hunting and it should last a good while. While not up to the standard of the higher quality 700 it also doesn't carry the high price tag. Enjoy

So what are the differences between the models? Barrel metal, machining differences?

770 has a totally different action...nowhere as smooth as the 700. You can't load it from the top. You can only load the detachable magazine.

There have been issues with the 710 model where the piece that holds the magazine broke. I think that was part of the reason for the change to 770. I'm not sure about the barrel, but I know the 770 are great shooting guns.

With that said, your other alternatives for a youth gun in that price range is a cheap single shot or lucking up on a used bolt. I still think you did great. That will be a great youth gun. Just make sure you work the bolt quite a bit before she hunts with it. They are very tight from the factory. By the way, the SS usually run at least $60 more than blue.

That's what the sales assoc said. Said this gun was marked down a good $50 and that he could only assume it was b/c the blued guns were on sale as well AND that they were also offering them in youth versions, so they marked the SS one down with the rest.

i have 770 ss 270 cal. the action isnt smooth and the camo is is peeling off. But it really shoots great and feels good. ill have black gun by next year but i dont care.
