Gate ?

My property sits off the road a good ways, and is fairly issolated. That being said, the local family that runs the area does ride around on four wheelers, and there has been someone ride a horse through it.

I dont want to tick off the local family (the head of which likes us right now and plows plots for us). Here is what I was thinking. The main entrance is perfect for a gate that would make 4 wheeler traffic hard. If I put up a good gate here, a wire line on the back side and signs on each with my name and number on them it will show a strong front.

However, I will give the family head a key so he can till plots and if he wants to ride back looking for morells in the spring...

what have yall done, and what do you think I about my plan?

I am a out of town land owner so neighbor relations are key.

That's an EXCELLENT plan. It might help improve your relationship with him as well. By giving him a key that shows trust and makes it perfectly clear that he is welcome just as before. He might even be a little more protective of your land for you as well since he will feel somewhat "pissed" when others tresspass where only he is supposed to have special access.

Oh, give him a key first, or tell him you are going to give him a key before you put up the signs and gate. That's just so you don't get stuck in the situation of him noticing before you can talk to him. That might then seem like you are just doing it because he said something or seemed pissed.

I dont even lock anything but thats because I live there close and know everyone in the county. I dont know what to tell ya about that one, you cant really keep people out if they want in and live close by. You will more than likely make the family upset by locking them out of the area they like to ride in. Sometimes your better off just letting them ride but making sure they know they aint to be in there from End of August to January.

Ive seen out of town landowners put up gates alot to keep folks out that have been roaming that country for eons and most often it ends in gates tore down, vehicles vandalized, etc. Just depends on how folks are in that area I suppose. I feel for out of town landowners in areas like mine.

DEFINITELY gate the property. Give neighbors you trust a key.

My place is gated and locked, yet my next door neighbor has a key. I've told them to walk/ride around and enjoy the property all they like outside of deer season. The more they appreciate the property the better they will look after it and protect it.

Maybe also add the comment "Whenever you need to get back there or y'all want to go riding (out of season) help yourself. I just wanted to make sure you had a key so you could still come and go just like before."

I put a fence up (actually all the way around my yard) between me and my next door neighbor here in town. He's a VERY GOOD neighbor. But when I started the chain-linking I showed him and told him where I was going to put a gate in the line between his yard and mine. Little gestures make a big difference. That meant I needed my yard fenced (to keep my dogs in and people out) but the gate showed he was welcome anytime, just like before. (no locks since I live here) He was fine with it.

Yes putting up a gate and giving him a key:

1) Shows trust

2) Non-schalauntly(SP) shows that you dont want anyone in there unless they have something that they have to do..(plowing plots)

That will probably cut down the traffic on the propery, which is a plus

Thanks guys, I like the idea of giving him the key before hand. I'll let you know how it goes. Like I said he has looked out for me so far...even took the people he leases his land to, and asked them to not crowd our line.

Something along the lines of "They are nice boys and have been working hard"

Luckily the guys leasing the land are from GA and I went and met them opening of gun and we hit it off...
