I think McKnight Softball Fields in the 'boro has a few Japanese Persimmon trees at the entrance to the first group of playing fields. Not sure about how deer eat them, but my goodness, they smell like sewage when they are rotting on the ground. The parks & recreation folks should remove these trees. Wow, do they stink.
We have 3. Used to have 4 but 1 died. Ours are slow growers. Produce fruit about 3 out of 4 years. I'd have to check, but I think they were still holding first week of December. They are really good to eat so I know the deer would love them. We have fences around them so the deer currently can't get to them. Where they are, there is some clay, so that may be stunting them some. But we do lime and fertilize them each spring. I wouldn't hesitate planting more in a different area just to see the difference in growth with our current ones. I remember them being really expensive
I have one large one that has been in our yard for many years. It is loaded with fruit every year. It attracts all kinds of critters from the time the weather gets cold. The persimmons stay on the tree until at least January. The deer love it. I have caught many coon, possum and grey fox under that tree.
