To say this season hasn't been the best would be a understatement up until yesterday evening. I've put in the time on my property as I always do only to have multiple hunts ruined by the folks down the roads herd of dogs. Had a few good bucks on cams, but only managed to keep seeing the same few small bucks with the biggest being a 1 1/2 year old 8 with about 3" tines. The whole dogs running the deer all over my farm and after 2 trips down to their house not getting much done has really started to wear on me. To be honest I've been so aggravated I've started to lose interest. Well things change for the better yesterday and sure enough helped my mood a little! With about a hour of daylight left the first small buck slipped out to feed, then with in the next 20 minutes 3 more had joined him. None were shooters, but I enjoy watching them. After awhile they started to ease off down the field edge. They made it about 100 yards away from where they had been and started to feed again. I keep my eye on them and was watched them thru the binos in the fading light. I glanced back over to the spot where they had first came out and noticed another deer feeding. It was a doe, so I turned my attention back to the bucks. After a few minutes I looked back her way and noticed another deer coming out off the tree line about 40 yards behind her. I was down to my last few minutes of shooting light at this point, and when I threw up the binos to look at him it was obvious it was shooter with no thought about it. He continued to walk towards the doe and never stopped. Crazy thing was he walked right pass her and never even really paid her any attention. He was on his way down the field toward the other bucks. He was at about 125 yards walking broadside, but was fixing to kind of turn away from me. I knew it was now or possibly never. As I settled the crosshairs of my 308 he stopped for a split second and I squeezed the trigger. I knew he was a good buck but really didn't know how good. At this point it was starting to drizzle rain, and when I got across the field to him I was in a hurry to get him up and back to the house. When I first checked him out I figured he was around the mid 140's in the dark and drizzle. I was pumped because he was without a doubt the biggest buck I have ever killed. Once I got him back to the house and in the light were I could check him out I realized he was bigger than I first thought. We did some quick rough scoring last night and I really couldn't believe what was coming up. Today me and the taxidermist after getting him capped out measured him again. Made it a lot easier with the rack up on the table. Took our time and got 165 2/8 gross. He weighed 212 lbs live weight and believe he was 4.5. Thought my season wasn't going to get any better, but that sure changed quick like. Sure got lucky, right place at the right time. I feel blessed, that's for sure.
