Would it be better to keep the small seedlings in pots at home for the first year, and then plant them, as opposed to sticking them in the ground right away? It seems they would be most vulnerable that first year, and could be watched closer, then transplanted after they have gotten bigger. Thoughts? thanks!

Jarred, How do you keep the seedlings over the winter? Do you have a greenhouse of some sort, or do you keep them in a garage or what? This is all new to me...

I keep them outside. I usually order mine for delivery in March, pot them, and I put them in an area that gets about 50% sunlight. I put a layer of mulch over the pots right before the heat of summer to keep the moisture in. Then plant them sometime from December to before spring greenup in early April.

When you plant them in pots, do you still use the tree tubes? Do they serve a purpose for a potted tree, that will be safe in my back yard? Also, do you just use regular old potting soil to fill your pots? TIA

why put them in pots plant them in the ground now the ground isn't frozin i just planted some trees last week now is the time to get the roots started and they do grow in the winter i planted a tree a month ago and then decided to move it last week it all ready had new white roots forming on it
just my 2 cents and put them in tree tubes makes then grow fast plus protects them from deer
