OK,we have three small fields on our lease- about a 1/4 acre each. Two are already planted - one with white clover, ladino clover, and some turnips and the other with a throw and grow. The throw and grow looked great about two weeks ago and the clover field was not great. We fenced off smaller sections within bow range for late season. The third field we usually just plant in turnips, but put some clover down as cover and plant to sow turnips later. The question is, when should we do this? I know the deer will browse anything that sprouts. We are planning to fence a small section in this field as well.

FWIW. The deer in my area do not like turnips. I know some people have plots that get mowed down by deer, though.
We switched to rye and as long as it was mowed they ate it. If it got mature forget it.

Guess I got picky deer. There are others on here that are much more knowledgeable than me. Let them chime in with good advice.

X2. Oats have worked well for me. As for when to plant, I'd wait until mid/late Sep

To answer your question a good rule of thumb is labor day weekend for everything except grain seeds. As mentioned above if u sow wheat or oats this early they will mature quickly and unless u mow them they will become tough. If you are planning on hunting these during muzzleloading season sow them 10-14 days prior to season opening. I have several well established clover plots and we always add our turnips, radishes, and canola around labor day weekend. We have a lot of turkeys and they seem to love eating these seeds so to help them sprout before they find them we time it the day before a good chance of rain. Then at the end of bow season we go in and sow our oats and have always had excellent luck with this. Good luck this season.

I just planted my food plot last weekend and done it all in purple top turnips the deer in my area love them but keep in mind it takes 30 days for them to mature. The deer in my area will not touch them till they been in the ground for 30 days. Also
