I pulled out my fly reel last night.Gettin the urge to use. I have not used since I left Knoxville 15 years ago. It is an Orvis Battenkill 4/5. I havent kept up with all the latest technolgy in fly line evolution. What would be a good all around line under $50? I guess WF double taper?
My current line is Scientific Anglers but has been on the reel 15 years! I reckon I need to change.
Whats up with this Sharkskin line? $100 :(

OK first screw the sharkskin line. Second spend a little more than 50, I think its 57 or 59 and, get the SA selective trout line in a 5WT. I have that line on three rods I love it. Its earth toned ( Brown), slick as bowriter after three drinks, and lasts a very long time. Get some "glide" to clean it with occasionally and your in business. I just happen to know where you can get some. Try calling FLy SOuth at 615-251-6199 they can ship it in the event you cant make it to nashville. FYI 15 year old backing IS rotten and should also be changed.

Oh the sharkskin may very well be the bomb but I wont pay that price for a line.
I use the SA on my Axis 5 wt and have not noticed any casting issues.

It was "the bomb" 5-6 years ago! I think it was made by SA. Probably will catch lots of fish for 25 bucks. Just make sure it's not some bright, flourescent color. They look good casting to humans and bad to the fish who really count.

I am using wonderline in my 5 weight and I like it. I might get something more expensive line does last a while, pay a little more now and it will last longer than a cheaper line.

I hate Orvis,
Just curious as to why.
I've never had a problem with any of their products, and their customer service has been over-the-top awesome. I couldn't care less and have zero loyalty to any particular brand, but I'm curious. As a guide, you'd know better than me.

I guess I've been lucky and haven't gotten the bad stuff. But I've only had 2 reels, 2 rods, and a vest. One rod and reel flew off the top of my car about 15 years ago. Wonder what idiot left it there? :D In our little addictive sport, that doesn't scratch the surface of the accumulated pile of crapola.
