Have fished the Clinch below Norris Dam in the summer many times. My question is how is it in the winter time? Am about hunted out for the year and was thinking of trying it out maybe on the next warm weekend. Is the fishing any good in the winter months and does anybody have any tips they care to share.

I've fished it in the winter... water is cold all year around so the fish don't really see a difference I believe.

I always fished with spinning rods. Not a fly-guy. Rapala in shallow cranks is what I used... or rooster tails. The bigger fish have come on Rapalas.

Good luck and watch the water release schedule. They can wash you down stream quickly.

Right now TVA is running the sleuce gates. The river is raging and out of its banks. I would wait on them to close the gates. I catch many more and bigger fish in the winter on the clinch. I have a 16' aluminum boat with a 60/40 Mercury jet outboard. When they are running two or more generators, in my opinion, is the best time to go. If you are fishing from land, go to the dam. Looking at the river from the parking lot, you will notice a large section of water that is slack or even running back towards the dam. Throw a jerk bait out into the flowing water. When it reaches the slack water, be ready. I have caught several 20"plus trout in this spot.

I tried fishing it from a kayak with my BNL. It was more than he could handle since he was new to the sport.

Our objective was to paddle upstream and fish down. The paddling upstream didn't get very far when he got washed into a fly fisherman when he caught a ride from wash around rocks. We loaded up and went to Melton Hill for him to get more practice.

It's not where I would want to learn to kayak if they are flowing water. If you're experienced, a float down is a long trip but probably worth it.
