I shot a small buck Friday evening, who was slightly quartered away. The shot felt good and looked good to me as it ran off. Upon inspecting my arrow I was shocked to see what looked like guts on it. I thought the shot was at worst liver entry. Upon recovering the deer the following day, it was 180 yards away with lungs hit, couldn't see where the liver was hit at all and I don't think it actually punctured the guts. There was food matter all over the lung and heart area and some a little lower too. I'm guessing I hit the esophagus? Does this entry wound look far enough back to have hit guts? I've hit deer in this area before and never gotten guts. I've hit deer a little further back and it been a straight liver shot.

It's very plausible you hit esophagus.

Also the diaphragm isn't a hard wall. It flexes/bulges backward and forward when the deer inhales or exhales deeply, or when his belly is really full. Any of that will slightly shift the position of his organs and stomach. So yes that entrance could very well have hit gut, but my guess is you hit esophagus.
