I am putting in my first real food plot.I have sent off my soil to get tested,do I need to work my spot and fertlize and then put down seed or can I do it all at once.

Wait till you get your test results back, it will tell you the recommended rate of lime and fertilizer. I like to work my ground first, then come back over top with the lime and fertilizer. I use a tiller, so I drop the tiller only a few inches in the ground and work it in, then plant. You can do it all at once, I've just found this method to give me the best results. How are you going to work your plot up, or what implements are you using?

I am going to wait until I get the results back and I am going to use a tiller.I was wanting to plant and fertilizer the same day.Just wondering if that would be ok.Thanks for your in put.

That's what I've done the past 3 seasons and my plots performed well. However, I also limed the heck out of them in the spring, which I believe helped tremendously when I planted in the fall.

Ok, I gotcha. Yes, I do normally do them all in the same day. As Vermin mentioned, liming early is a advantage. Lime doesn't work instantly, but takes time to change the ph of soil. Your on the right track, what are you planting.

I was thinking of planting winter greens and winter peas, does that sound like a good combination.

I put this plot here about 5 years ago and put about a ton of lime on it and planted some clover but they wasn't enough sunlight.I had it logged 2 years ago and I had him to open it up,now it gets sunlight just about all day.Didn't know what I was doing and was just playing around. The lime was free and the seed didn't cost much and I did all the work. Now that it gets sunlight I thought I would try to do it right.

Peas and greens work really well for me, however i have found that the peas do better if you plant them mixed with wheat or Oates it seems to help with over-grazing of the peas.....i usually do a 50-50 mix, and on the winter greens if you don't already have your seeds Deer creek seed has dwarf essex Rape 5# for $7
