Beautiful morning!! Got to stand just before daybreak. Cocked the crossbow on the ground, then pulled it and our packs up into tree stand. My fiance` climbs up after me. Something's missing...hmm...no bolts for crossbow!! (Rookie Mistake)...lol. Climb down, walk back to get quiver. Ok, get to stand just AFTER daybreak. Good morning over all. Saw 12 does, (7 in one group strolled by just out of range), but had no shot. 10:50am, my butt is sore and toes were cold, so I climbed down to switch the camera card. Sprayed the no scent stuff around camera and trailed it back to stand. 10:55am, figured our morning was just about over, we're both having a cigarette, talking, and looking at the trail cam pics, in walk 4 does!! Here we are, smoking, talking, and about as compromised and you can be, and mama doe walks up to 10 yards checking us out!! We're fumbling with our stuff and moving real slow to get crossbow up for a shot, (seemed like it took forever). Mama doe got a little spooky, but never blew, just started to walk off. Still had to move slow, (3 other sets of eyes looking at this odd knot on the tree), crossbow butt end was caught in her pocket (@#%!). Finally got it up for a shot, last doe was in last clear spot for a shot at 25 yards, and I drilled her. High lung shot, 2" Rage broadhead, Barnett Jackal put the hurt on. Knocked her over, she kicked for about 30 seconds and expired where she lay. Sold on these broadheads, looked like a crime scene. We were both pumped, first ever archery / crossbow deer. Sorry for the long read.

From the stand...

From the spot of impact back to stand...

It actually did cut through, but it kind of knocked her down and pinned her to the ground, so it wasn't a full pass through, but the broadhead did punch through the other side. Then, she rolled over and broke the fletching end of the arrow off...lol

It doesn't look like you got lungs on the shot. You may have gotten spine and dorsal artery. Very large artery. Notice the spray around the deer and that would indicate an arterial hit.

Always try to take the time check out the shot placement on your deer. You can learn a lot by checking your shot path and what your shot placement accomplished.

No not low for a spine. Check the placement versus the diagrams. Check the circulatory system diagram and you will see that there are an artery and a vein running along the spine. That explains the blood. Anytime a deer drops in their tracks from a bow shot you have hit the nervous system. Check the diagrams and you will see what I'm saying. Always check your deer out after they are down. You will learn a lot about anatomy by inspecting your dead deer. This will lead to many A-Haa moments. This will come in handy on other deer you may take. What you learn today will pay dividends tomorrow.
