I think I've finally found a practical use for sweet gum balls. This year I only have a few plants planted in 5 gallon buckets. They're doing fine except for the squirrels. They keep digging the dirt inside the buckets. I've had the same problem with them digging in flower beds as well. A layer of sweet gum balls on the top of the ground and the squirrels don't want to dig in there any more. I'll know better how it keeps them out a little later but it seems to work...and may even help hold some moisture. If it works I'll have all bags of "You Ain't Digging Here Anymore" for sale at $29.95 a bag next spring. Reserve yours now.

I wish someone would come with a way to keep the tree from producing them. I'm ok with digging squirrels but not those dang gumballs.
