Fall planting

What are good to plant once summer vegs are gone. I have a small 9x15 garden and wanted something besides butternut squash.

We have never planted in the late summer or early fall but this year we are considering a fall garden....studying on a couple of different lettuces, cabbage, maybe carrots and want to start some garlic.

Cover crops for unused areas
Squash and cucumbers can be a late crop
I have 2 nd cropped potatoes planted July 1
They don't do as well but new potatoes in October are pretty good

I've done broccoli in the fall but last year my plants were a major flop

Here is my broccoli. Thought it would be the size of the ones I buy in store. Having to cut it early as it's starting to try to separate and bloom

Aside from the above mentioned, I did diakon radish a couple yrs ago. Not for any food value...it was more of a ground prep thing.
