Had another great hunt, before all this nasty weather rolled in. Went to a farm close to home, where I heard a group of coyotes serenading while I was out for an evening run a few days earlier. Been awhile since I ventured into this block. In fact, this is usually just a spot I squirrel hunt, when the hickories are prime in the creek bottoms. There are a lot of deer hunters around this tract so I usually wait until the area has aired out abit. Figured it has been 6 weeks since a boot has crossed through here, so I figured the spot was ready. decided to test out the Mossback Banshee open reed. I really like this call, a lot raspier than most of the calls on my lanyard. I have found that raspy calls seem to be more effective during the late season, for whatever reason. Hit the field at first light. Opened with an invitation howl. No response came. after 5 minutes, went to raspy distress. At the 5 minute mark I had a hawk, give me a fly by then lit in the top of a big elm tree. As we had a brief staring contest. I noticed him glance back towards the creek. My eyes followed his direction and I could see the reddish coat of a coyote making its way along the creek, just inside the woods line. She was slow but consistent in her approach. The sage covered most of body, but I could see her head neck and top of her shoulder. I knew I could slip one in. I barked at her to get her to settle for the shot. 52 steps later, this where I found her. 3rd estrous female of the season, lover boy was no where to be found. really well furred. 30 pounds. Took the cz today. Gonna carry the weatherby 22-250 here on out, as it is the only one I haven't killed with yet this yr. They should really be prime after all the cold and ice subsides, later this week
