I am setting up my first snare (Collarum with bait) and was reading that a drag scent is useful to guide the coyote into the area.
I'm not finding much info on this.
What scent and how to apply?

never used a drag scent,,but im guessing they mean to tie a chunk of meat like a set of deer ribs to a string, drag it through the woods and stop at your trap.. they do make LDC scent.. "long distance call" that you put up on a branch head high or so, it will drift out into the area and get them interested enough to come looking.. better that all of this is to just set the trap where the coyotes are at and dont try to lure them way off their path..

where were you reading this??

A lot of guys using snares will prebait with a big pile, then set up snares on the trails going to and from the bait. To help them find the bait faster I've seen on videos dragging beaver or whatever on the road out to the pile.

I have tried it. Works....ok. Its not a magic bullet.

The key to success is YOU doing what the animal wants, not trying to force them to do what you want.

LOCATION is the key to that. Your set needs to be where they want to go anyway.

I have caught ONE yote in an off location set, where dragging a bloody deer carcass lured it in.
I have caught many more with snares in under fence crossing sets where they want to go anyway. No lure or bait.

If you are doing under fence sets, make sure the wire is low enough that a deer or fawn wont try and go under. I disconnected the top two strands of barbwire and twisted them together so the deer will hop over. (no cattle in this location)
