I know it's way early, but just getting my ducks in a row. Gonna plant Clearfield sunflowers this go around. Where is some of the better places to order them? Only gonna need around 15bs seed. I was thinking of planting sunflowers on 2 sides of the field and sowing Dove proso millet in a 100ft strip between the sunflowers.

Planted peredovic last spring, but didn't put a pre*emerge down (big mistake). Grasses were no problem. used Fusalaide on them and smoked all grasses. Run cultivators down the rows, but still had a problem with broadleafs.

Give me a few days to get started on posting information

This will be my 20th year of planting 5 fields, about 30 acres total.

I research the subject quite often for new information on keeping the
Sunflower fields clean. I have contacts in the different regions that raise
sunflowers for market/cash crop. Plus I usually call some of the University's ag department that have sunflower test plots

I will post a picture

They are "Cropland 7111" Clearfield, short statue and early maturity

Before heads turned down they were about 40 inches tall
They matured 85 days from planting

I wanted to try them one time just to see how good they were.

I was not overly impressed with them at a little over $375.00 per bag.
The sacks are by seed count and not by weight.

I sprayed "Beyond" over the top and then sprayed "Pursuit" over the top.
Neither herbicide did any good. Sugar water would have probably given
just the same results

If you don't have to fight marestail or pigweed then the herbicides listed for Clearfield variety might work great in your area, Beyond and Pursuit does absolutely no good on certain weeds in West Tennessee

Another mistake I made was putting them on 30 inch rows, going back out to 36 inch this time. I use a old ford 309 planter and a bean plate( wrong size) but don't have the right size plates .Going to slow down the drop to space the seeds out a little more.

You can order sunflower seed plates from Lincoln Ag. 402.464.6367

If you order plate(s) you will also need spacer for plates

I in theory plant a seed every 7-8 inches on 38 inch width rows

Chaney,
Have you used imazapic (generic plateau) on your sunflowers?

it mainly used if you have a sicklepod problem, and can be used on "ClearField" sunflowers
our main problem in our area is "pigweed"

Imazamox is the only imidazolinone herbicide registered for use on Clearfield® sunflowers. Imazamox does not effectively control sicklepod (Senna obtusifolia L.). Imazapic is a peanut herbicide that growers would prefer to use on Clearfield® sunflowers because of it's effectiveness on sicklepod. The objective of this research was to evaluate the tolerance of three Clearfield® sunflower hybrids to postemergence applications of imazapic. Field trials were established in 2007 and 2008 at the UGA Ponder Research Farm located near Tifton, GA. All treatments were arranged in a split-plot design with four replications. Whole plots were sunflower hybrids (Dekalb DKF3880CL, Mycogen 8N386CL, Mycogen 8H419CL) and sub-plots were herbicides (non-treated control;imazamox @ 0.031 lb ai/A + Activator 90 @ 0.25% v/v + 28% UAN @ 2.5% v/v; imazapic @ 0.063 or 0.125 lb ai/A + Activator 90 @ 0.25% v/v). The sunflower hybrids were planted on April 2, 2007 and April 1, 2008. The herbicide treatments were applied on May 1, 2007 and May 2, 2008. At the time of application, the sunflowers were 5-8" tall with 6-10 leaves. The entire plot area was maintained weed-free throughout the season. Plant height and above-ground biomass data were collected 7 and 30 days after treatment (DAT) by measuring and harvesting five plants from each plot. Seed-head numbers were counted from one row meter in each plot. Seed-head weights were collected by harvesting five heads from each plot at maturity. All data were subjected to ANOVA and differences among sunflower hybrid and herbicide least squares means were determined by pairwise t-tests at the 5% level of significance. Imazapic had no effect on sunflower biomass, height, seed-head production, or seed-head weight. Imazapic @ 0.125 lb ai/A caused significant sunflower whorl chlorosis early in the season but this injury was transitory.
