I notice the author didn't out his name on it. Sounds like a simple rant to me. I do agree that the commercialization has been detrimental to deer hunting. However, everyone has the choice to follow like minions or to do their own thing,

He complains that shifting the opening day of the season from a Monday to a Saturday is a season killer and a business killer. I fail to see how that would be anything but a benefit to the blue collar hunter.

Even closer to home, the changing of the opening of the regular deer season from Monday to Saturday in New York state has widely been chronicled as a disaster of biblical proportions on numerous levels.
For starters, because of timing, the Saturday opener killed the tradition of the deer camp for the average guy. Not to mention the business-killing effect.

So, the average guy can go camping on Sunday and Monday night, but not Friday and Saturday night?

I agree. The average Joe works Monday through Friday. Opening on Saturday would make more sense.

The article is written by Oak Duke. Apparently he is the Bowriter of the Wellsville Daily Reporter, a small hometown newspaper with an outdoor column.

He is completely wrong about the changing of the opener from a Monday to a Saturday being a disaster. It will give more people an opportunity to get in the woods and hunt on opening day. If they still have the desire to take off work to enjoy the opener then they should take Thursday and Friday off to head to camp, get set up and drink whiskey and tell lies.

Oak is getting old and set in his ways. Probably a little of a curmudgeon as well would be my guess. He doesn't want or like change like so many older people. I get it. I am sure I will be like him eventually.

It appears to me that they have a one buck limit in NY. I do agree with Oak that I think antler restrictions are not a good idea when you have a one buck limit. It is like hitting the hunter twice. If you are dead set on regulation to increase the age structure I feel you should have one or the other but not both. I personally am against either.

Deer hunting should be fun, not a competition. If you want to shoot young bucks then fine by me. At this stage in my life it is more about the overall experience than size. That being said, I love to shoot a big buck when I can but will not hesitate on a smaller one if the mood strikes me.

Re: Doom & Gloom in NY State

I will say this being from upstate NY when the changed the Monday opener to Sat it hurt. Such a tradition. Schools would close because of it. Resurants loved it the hunters coming in . The hunters would camp monday through the weekend, not just hunt on days off. They took time off because the Rut was on in the Souther tier. There was traffic going into the Southern zone so heavy on Monday that it was backed up for miles. No more now.

Now with the lengthing of bow season and cutting into the rifle season, a lot of hunters have stopped. Bow is really hurting Hunting up there because they want gun season stopped. They feel they are the traditional hunters really. They hunt with compound bow, nothing traditional about a compound bow.

The Antler restriction is garbage have some selfdicipline.

There is way more behind the scenes then is being told. I am not even going home to hunt this year. I have had it with NY state and all the bull Econ is doing up there and the Bow lobbiest.

ENCON leased out like 6000 acres to a private hunting lease how wrong was that. To take it away from the everyday hunters. It is now suppose to be turned back into State land once again we shall see.

That land was my stomping ground up there. I get so tired of Bow hunters and gun hunters fighting. Dam just fight to keep our sport alive.

This infighting has to stop or it will be gone. There is so much more going on trust me I talk to my brothers and have a friend there that worked for ENCON.

My hunting in my home state is done.

Re: Doom & Gloom in NY State

That is crazy, that is the town that I am from. Back 20 or more years ago skipping school on opening day was an excused absence, lol. It was also shotgun only. It was like a flood of "city" hunters coming down every year , not welcome by local hunters of course. The bars, restaurants, and stores enjoyed it though. That brings back a lot of memories. Many many more reasons why NY sucks , state taxes, county taxes, school taxes.
