Well I may get flamed but I doe'd out today. I hunted yesterday and the fog killed me. For the last 2 weeks I've had 2 bucks that walk through I can watch and it's been clock work. One comes through and walks the fence line and the other walks around the opposite way around the tip of the hill. I threw up a pop up blind last weekend and watched them walk within 30 yds all week, and yesterday nothing. Today I woke up and it was drizzling and went back to bed. So about the same time as normal I look out and there he is 20 yds from the blind. At the edge of the yard-treeline I see 2 does and watches them. One doe had her front leg dangling and was falling over the down limbs. I thought about it and considered it may ruin my chances at this buck. But watching it struggle to keep up with the others I decided that I'd rather eat it than coyotes. So 3 things happened that never has: 1 I shot her off my back deck, 2, my daughter 6 years old saw me shoot her and 3 saw her after. I explained that God provides us the meat we eat and killing anything is serious. Also it was a great learning experience to explain again about guns and we don't play with them. Fast forward to this afternoon and the buck is on the hillside and looking good. I was able to glass him real good and say he's 3.5. This late in the season I've decided to pass and let him get another year.

I like that your daughter saw and you explained what happened. I think it's important for kids to learn where food comes from and the difference between shrink wrapped steaks and 100% pure organic. It's also important for them learn about firearms as well!

Congrats on the meat and valuable life lessons for your daughter.

Congrats! No judgement here. Actually tip my hat to you for doing the right thing and teaching your daughter some important life lessons! Great job!

My five year old daughter has watched me shoot 3 coyotes and 2 deer off my front porch. Her response is "daddy got it, don't leave me, I gotta go put my pants and boots on so I can help you load it"....if your lil girl like mine, she'll remember those moments for the rest of her life!!!!!
Like I tell people, I busted my tail my whole life to be able to buy a place and now I've worked hard to make it a place critters love. As long as it's a safe shot, I'll shoot'em and apologize to no one!!!!

If you live in the country where you can shoot off your back porch/deck or out a window, then do what you want. I can tell you you are not alone in this endeavor.

Plus she was hurt, so you did the right thing. Congrats.
