I've tried many times to get a reaction (other than hidding) from a squirrel to a call. I've got one of those small metal discs, that makes a distress call when you pull air through it,a wooden block and striker used to mimic barks and also a bellows call that makes barks. I've tried these calls when a squirrel is moving away from me and when no squirrels can been seen. I've tried them in various situations and have never seen a benefit. I don't know if I'm using them wrong or squirrels just don't respond to calling. Anyone had any luck? If not, I may as well taken them out of field bag.

The only thing I have ever done is if I shoot and miss or there is another squirrel in the tree I will bark with my mouth to make him show hiself. It almost always results with a squirrel "riding out" so you got to be quick.

Sometimes squirrel distress calls will get them running-Away from you! I've had that happen a couple of times. :)

They say that you should use the distress call in conjunction with a branch or one of those turkey wing things. You beat the branch/wing against your leg or the ground while blowing the distress call.

I have one of the Mr. squirrel (disk) calls I bought back in the 80s, never had any luck with it at all.

Also have a bellow call, think it mite be a woods wise, but it sounds like the real deal, all the others sounded kind of squeaky, regaurdless of how realistic it sounds it hasnt called the first thing.

You will probably laugh but here goes.

Every time I do a rattle sequence when deer hunting, within a minute or so squirrels get down out of a tree and scamper over to a different tree. Fools me into thinking a deer is responding.

For some reason they like to investigate a deer grunt call too.
Guess I am doing it wrong ! :D

Works every now and again for me. I use the distress whistle and beat the heck out of a sapling or branch on the ground or your cap on your thigh while doing it. Sometimes they will come running right at you.

What I mainly use them for is to get a far off squirrel to reveal it's location. Then I sneak in.
