I had a deer answer my grunt call for the 1st time Saturday. I've thought I had heard grunts in the woods before but never sure - this deer definitely let out a long grunt in response to my grunting with a call. The reason I am asking about does is that I never could get a look at the deer. It just started coughing/alarm barking at me from about 40-50yds upwind. It kept this up for about a minute, left then came back about 10 minutes later and repeated the same. I only got two very quick glimpses at a shadow passing through the trees and legs going under some thick stuff. The fact that it didn't immediately leave the area makes me think it was a doe or at best a yearling buck. But I had always thought that does didn't grunt. How about it?

I second what BSK said. I've never heard of does making a buck-like grunt. They'll bleat in differnt tones and volumes.

Does will make very low grunting-like noises when calling to their fawns.
i saw a doe do that one time to a yearling. it was nosing around a gut pile of a deer i had shot the day before and she made some noises and the yearling trotted back over to her. That was cool to witness.

They most certainly do. On opening day of archery this year I had a doe come grunting in response to a fawn bleat. It was a lot softer than what you normally hear from a grunt call.

They grunt, they bleat, they mew, they click, they make a host of sounds, most of which we never hear or understand.

Hmmmm, well this grunt was a nice long loud grunt. I just thought it was odd that a buck would hang around that long if it suspected something was wrong. Guess I'll never know for sure.
