Who do us small game hunters need to complain to about the deer seasons being too long in tennessee. I know the whole twra is focused around deer and deer hunting but they are a lot of small game hunters in tennessee also. They need to balance the deer and small game seasons better. I like to deer hunt also but after I get a couple in the freezer I like to train pups and run dogs. Also on the wma's they need to help the rabbit population and habitat and get the population up. Just my thoughts.

Welcome to the site...But Big Game hunters is where the money is at,and is where TWRA gets most of thier money..

squirrel season opens a month before bow season and runs a month and a half after all deer closes plus a couple of more months in the spring. most other small game seasons also run until the end of feb. there is plenty of time and opportunities for small game.

Yea sqirrel season opens a month before deer but that is for still hunters I hunt with dogs have you ever tried to find a squirrel in a hickory tree with the leaves on. Deer hunters get 4 months and a week or two and Jan. so actually rabbit hunters get 1.5 months of actual hunting. I try to be respectiful and not run dogs during deer season but I see no way around it if they keep extending season.

i have shared WMA space with rabbit and duck(at the same time) hunters while deer hunting and everybody got along just fine. just like deer hunting, if you do a little legwork, there is plenty of small game hunting.

Kinda Ironic isn't it...I mean by your location and all...LOL Just couldn't help it
:D Maybe deer season isn't going to great?

no one stopping you from hunting small game except your self, you have 2 1/2 months longer to hunt small game than deer hunters get to hunt, get out there and enjoy the woods, plenty of room for everyone

Well I normally go to a wma but here lately its been open to so that knock that in the head. I am also a deer hunter and I have already killed what I will eat and I have a wall full of deer heads. I have tried to hunt while deer hunting and only made some deer hunters mad and one time I had two beagles shot and killed by deer hunters. I have too much time and money to send my dogs out to possibly get killed or me kill somebody. Like I said I am also a deer hunter an I wouldn't want someone run dogs over me so I am not going to do that to someone else.I just think that twra could do a little better on the deer hunting times. Deer hunting is open for 4 months rabbit hunting is open almost 4 months and deer is open 1.5 months of that.

Did you press charges for them shooting your beagles? It would be world war 3 if someone shot my beagle while I was legally rabbit hunting on property that I had permission to be on..

I couldn't press charges they ran down in a big hollar and when I got down to them and seen what happen I could not find anybody I looked and looked and didn't find anybody and I was hunting on my own property.

not enough time in the year for everyone not to overlap, find a spot without deer hunters is all i know if you dont want to share the outdoors with them, sorry about your dogs, i would never shoot anyones beagles even if they ran off the biggest deer in the world,i like sharing the woods and fields with rabbit and squirrel hunters it seems to keep the deer on their feet, good luck

I agree 100%! I'm sick of all the deer hunters that think deer season is the only thing to do when it is deer season.

Why do they get the "Right" over the rest of us. Why is deer season the prime sport over anything else?

Yes i'm a deer hunter as well. But the deer are not getting any rest. Everyone shoots everything in sight. Not many deer are moving in the day due to the pressure. It just isn't fun any more.

Now i'm having a blast running my squirrel dogs. But it is getting harder and harder to run them.

Catoosa is my closest WMA. I'm glad that they allow sunday for small game hunters. At least that does give me an option. But they close down in February. And a weekend trip is out of the picture. Because every weekend they have a big game hunt thursday-saturday. Now they have the HOG hunt in the first weekend of January.

The great argument. Squirrel season last until August until February. Yes that is true. But it is very very difficult to run squirrel dogs in August and September due to the leaves on the trees and snakes in the woods. When January comes around it is so cold squirrel are in the den trees and hard to get a kill. In febuary squirrels are having little ones. They are nesting. IF you kill a female it will have babies in it.

The "PRIME" time to run the dogs is in the months of Oct- Dec.

If you are trying to train a pup, it is almost impossible with the prime times closed for deer season.

My question is, if deer season was in August would the deer hunters go knowing it is not the prime time to go?

How many deer hunters do you see at the late second gun hunt. about 1/4 of the hunters that are hunting in November.

Like what others have said, it is about the all mighty dollar. TWRA is really messing the small game hunters up.

I wish unit B would go back to the one week ML and give the deer a break.

there is very little closed to small game hunters. catoosa is not the only place.

Thats what I saying there is nowhere within a 1hrs. drive that the deer season is closed and the statewide is open.Hunting is for everyone lets make the seasons to fit all hunting on just deer.

I know your trying to be respectable to deer hunters but you have just as much right to be there and if you wanted to hunt bad enough you would. Im not trying to be a smart alleck about it im just saying.

mt. roosevelt is pretty much deserted this time of year.

The next two weeks are good for small game hunting, as it's archery only. Most people (key word--most) aren't bringing out the bow in this cold weather. If I get the time during the weekend, I might go do some small game hunting.

This sounds like a thread in the political forum...

Everyone wants everyone to give up something for them.

"Christmas" sign offends someone...we take it down.

Deer season is only open from the last Sat. in Sept to the second Sat. in Jan. This is only 3.5 months not 4+. Gun season only makes up 6 weeks of this and only 5 weeks of gun season is during rabbit season.

Cruff, you complain about the deer not having a break.. I've never ran dogs for anything, but wouldn't one small game hunter setting out one or two hounds not run deer as well? Many of times I've seen deer ran off by dogs.. To personally answer your question, yes, I would be in the woods for deer season no matter what time of the year. Ask yourself the same about small game. Since it's not working for you right now, push for it to be in August when deer season's not in. Would YOU go then? I personally don't see a bunch of small game hunters running through the woods with dogs blasting away at squirrel and rabbit giving the deer anymore rest than they get during season.

I am done talking about this I will take this up at the next twra commision meeting I already have several of the small game hunters across the state to be in attendance. And yes flipper I catch someone shooting my dogs it will be the worst day of mine or their life. It takes a animal to shoot someones dog for no reason and it is also against the law even if it is your property.
