So I haven't hunted with decoys in the last 2 years. While I have killed birds, I did find myself in situations where I could have killed more if I had decoys. For those that use them, what's your strategy? Are the expensive ones worth the investment (Avian-X or David Smith)?

I bit the bullet and bought the Avian X Hen last year and a buddy bought the Jake. We either got set up on some really pissed off Toms or they are worth the money. Because when they flew down they ran about 40 yards and whopped that jake decoy like it owed them money. I have used other brands for years and after that I must say they did work better than what I had personally seen before. the Smiths look great but they cost even more.

I bought the Avian X hen and jake combo pack...they look great. Like duckriver said they David Smiths look a little better but for the price it isnt worth it. If they get close enough to see the difference in those two decoys then they should be flopping.

I bit the bullet today and ordered the DSD Breeding pair and a feeding hen. I'm introducing a few buddies to turkey hunting this year. Might as well be prepared with good gear.

I have the diss strutter, breeder, upright hen. The avian jake, feeder hen, and breeder hen.... I leave my dsd's at home and use my avian x crew the jake has been deemed the go decoy..... The dsds are to loud in the woods in my opinion .... I am getting ready to get a new hen from some guys out of pa that are awesome !! Spur collector decoys

I use decoys from time to time but have NEVER killed with them. I hunt in the timber seems like they do more harm than good for me last year may have been the last time I use them. Once they see decoys they always turn and leave. But I know folks who use them in fields with much success.

I'm in the same boat. I've killed birds with them and without them over the last 2 or so years. Seems like last year, while hunting new property, i got into situations where I think they would have helped. We'll see...if they screw me up, I'm placing an ad in the classified forum.

I'm thinking of going with the avian x combo, been wanting to try the mojo . never heard if they work yet

I have never had a negative reaction to a decoy. that may change on the next trip but there are several times where the bird didn't see a hen and walked off. a decoy may have helped. or it may not :)
