yesterday afternoon.

Here is the story:

I was going to look at a rifle in Columbia yesterday morning on the way to a job site. Took the cash in case it was exactly what I wanted and it was in the condition it was said to be in. I was looking at a Rem. 700 in 30-06 with scope for $325. Price sounded great, gun was in good standing (not stolen). Called the guy after a few e-mails and he assured me the gun was in very good condition.

Well after looking at it, the receiver and barrel had surface rust on the right side, the end of the barrel was skint up where it had been rubbing something, and it had the "J" lock on the bolt. I was not too happy with the rust and declined to buy it.

Went to the job site and completed my work. Headed home, but decided to stop in a little archery/gun shop just outside of Columbia to try and get some broadheads for bow season.

Baxter83 and I were inside looking around and a fellow came walking in with a rather nice rifle. We continued looking around and I heard a conversation exchanged between the man and the guy behind the archery counter. Guy said the owner had gone to pick his son up from school and would be back in around 30 min. The man with the rifle didn't seem too excited.

Baxter83 and I had walked around some more and was about ready to take a gander at the gun room when this fellow with the rifle strolls by. I commented on how nice his rifle looked. He said " you interested in buying one?" I said how much you asking (knowing I only had $320 now in my pocket since I bought a drink). He said "I would like to get $400 for it." I say what kind is it, thinking to myself it looked like a Remington 700. He said it was a Remington 700.... my heart skipped a beat. I said what caliber..... he said .270.... I was a little let down because I have been wanting another 30-06 since I sold my last one.

I said it looked nice, but all I had in my pocket was $320. He said the shop owner said he would pay him $350 for it.... I repeated my last statement that I only had $320. He was in a hurry to pick his wife up from somewhere and didn't want to wait any longer. After several minutes of thinking about his options, He said "$320, I will take it. I need to get my wife picked up." I said it's not hot, he assured me it wasn't and gave me his personal info.

So for $320 I got a Remington 700 BDL in .270 with a Nikon 3x9x40 Buck Masters scope. Not a speck of rust, all bluing looks very good, bolt is polished, wood has a couple of usage marks but I can see my reflection in it. Inside the barrel looks new and the action is smooth as silk. The man said it might have 2 boxes of ammo through it.

I guess the old saying, being in the right place at the right time can be lucky.... So I guess I will be trying my first ever .270 out this year.

No offence to teh '06 fans, but I think you got the better deal all the way around. You should like the 270 if you just hunt deer and maybe coyotes with it.

If you handload, you can load up some 90 gr hollowpoints at well over 3300 FPS. I get 3300 fps with mine, and they aren't even max loads, nor the fastest powder.

I am getting more excited reading the input from you guys.... I have never owned a .270 until now.

I am thinking about trying the 140gr Accubonds in it, what say you guys?

Were you arrested??? For stealing that rifle/scope. That is a heck of a deal for that rifle scope combo. Looks to be an older one too when quality was better. I think you will like the .270-I always liked the 130g bullets as they seem to go with the .270 like cornbread and buttermilk. PH

I get 3300 fps with my .30-06 using Sierra 110 gr varminter hollowpoints, great coyote medicine.

That's definitely a great deal on the .270 though!

factory ammo would be the Fed Supreme 130 gr Sierra SBT

handloads would be the same Sierra 130 SBT bullet and RL19

Thats a day to remember. Very nice rifle and my favorite factory chambering. Very easy on the shoulder, and very tough on the deer. Try 60.5 grains VihtaVhouri N560 and a 130 Nosler Accubond.

try the 130 gr. core-lokts if looking for factory ammo. mine will shoot a ragged hole 5 shot group with the remis. never let me down in over 20yrs. but mine's a winchester ;)

Great deal, now man up and go give the dealer $50-$75 for buying it in his shop.

Didn't buy it in the shop, bought it in the parking lot.... If he would have been there, I would have been buying broadheads instead.... :D

I tried 140 gr Nosler Ballistic Tips, but the 130s were a tad more accurate and flatter shooting in my gun. It likes Ballistic Tips, Sierra Game Kings, and I'm about to try some SSTs as soon as the Ballistics Tips are used up. I really like the Ballistic Tips for shots farther than 75 yards, but the places I hunt I frequently have shots inside of 35 yards. The BTs has some trouble staying together on such close, high velocity shots. The Accubonds will certainly stay together well for you, but SSTs and even Hornady Interlocks will stay together too, at a much lower cost. I don't think Accubonds are really required for Whitetails unless you are pushing them at extreme velocities.

Great as long as it was outside.I know it always pissed me off when customers would try to buy things from others in the shop i worked in.Good deal.

Congrats,The rifle wasn't Hot but the Deal Was. LOL

On the bullet wieght for the 270 I would perfer 140gr Partitions or AB's myself unless the Barnes are in the mix then I might drop down a bit and feel good about it. Although the 130grs have killed a boat load of deer and other critters I ain't impressed with them in the 270 Win deer kills I have been around.

Holy Crap! I can't believe you got on here and wrote a small book about this dang thing!!!! :D

Get over yourself you lucky DONKEY!
