Is it legal to call coons in the daytime? The regs say 2 coons per 24 hour period. I would be doing this after deer season. Im about to have a 17 WSM and am chompin at the bit to try it on coons, bobcat and coyotes.

Page 17 of TN hunting and trapping guide:

Raccoon and Opossum hunting Opossum can be taken during the raccoon
hunting season. No limit.
Statewide - Opens sunset Sept. 20 Feb. 28, 2014; bag limit 2 per person per night. Night is defined as one 24-hour period beginning at sunset.

Doesn't say anything about calling during the daytime. They are actually defining night as a 24 period. Coons coming out in the day should probably be shot anyways :)

I got a trapper and predator caller magazine a couple of months back that had a really good article on day time calling.. the guy had take hundreds of coon from den trees with a old boom box and cassette..funny thing I remember is he stated that the sound didnt really call them but actually "ran" them out of the den..

The Minaska game call guys did a video called "Brawling Bandits" to help promote their Bandit e-caller several years back (I have one, it's for sale) saw it and thought it was pretty exciting so me an a buddy tried it. 30 seconds into a distressed coon kit call 2 bailed out of den tree from about 20 ft up hit the ground running and attacked my decoy before I could get scope on them....my buddy was laughing so hard he bout got choked....I had to throw stick at them to get them off decoy, as it was only 10 ft from me....so yes you can call them and when it happens it can be very fast, exciting and possibly the most fun you can have in the woods with your pants on....legally....

I call them at night with good success, it's a ton of fun! Sometimes they will almost run into your lap! You got to use a mouth call since e-callers are not legal at night wich is fine with me because I prefer mouth calls anyway.

I guess I am confused about the gun light law..I thought that the only way you can be out at night hunting with a gun and a light(other than bullfrogs) was that you had to have a dog with you..ie.. coon/opossum hunting..

Yes, you are confused, lol. You can coon hunt at night without a dog. However, you cannot predator hunt at night with any type of predator calls or electronic calls. Maybe SCN will chime in to clarify but I've checked on it before.

I posted the question in the twra section.. here is his answer..

A coon squaller to locate them in the tree while hunting with dogs is probably OK during the taking season.

But, Proclamnation 13-08 says:

7. Use or possession of the following equipment is prohibited:

*Predator calls while night hunting.

I understand you can't have "predator" calls at night. There is no law I can find that says you have to use a dog for coon hunting. It was a twra officer that told me calling coons at night with a squaller was legal. Maybe it has changed, I'll look into it again.

This regulation is vague in relation to using a coon squaller in nontraditonal ways. We will try to clarify it during the upcoming review of the Manner and Means proclamation.

My suggestion in the interim is to be in contact with the local officer before using in a nontraditional way since they will be making the enforcement call on it.

Right now it is open to some imterpretation. We will try to clarify one way or the other for the 2014-15 Manner and Means.
