Disturbingly sad though to see how many feel shooting a turkey at 80 yards is just fine, just because TSS gives them a chance. I'm losing all hope for the future of this sport.

The greater chance may be in wounding birds that later go off to die from a single pellet in their gut.
Not just the birds fired at, but other birds nearby, and sometimes nesting in background.

The greater the distance, the more potential for collateral damage.

Yep, it's sad to see turkey hunting evolving more into just going shooting.

But problem is not with TSS.
It's more about the differences between hunting & shooting,
as well as how long-range turkey shooting is being marketed and promoted.
Used more as hunting tool at more traditional ranges (under 45 yards)
TSS can actually result in fewer wounding losses
along with the ability to carrying lighter weight, lighter recoil shotguns.

This is only going to become more common. Back when TSS was only available to those who loaded their own shells, it wasn't a big deal. But, now that it's available to the masses and being advertised as increasing range, it will only result in further and further shots. Keep in mind that this stuff is expensive, so how many of these long range shooters are patterning their guns and becoming efficient with them?

The Federal TSS I bought says something about 60 yards on the box.
But didn't Winchester (years ago) start MARKETING their LEAD loads as "good to 80 yards"?!?

This is not necessarily a TSS "issue".
It's a marketing issue, it's drawing more attention for the shooting instead of the hunting, etc.

Ammo manufacturers don't make $ off of hunting
so much as they make their $ off shooting.
So they focus more on shooting.

It's up to us to do more to promote that hunting and shooting are not one of the same "sports"
just because hunting does involve shooting.

I agree 100%! I didn't mean to sound like I was blaming TSS. I'm more blaming the marketing.

I was pretty much told this doesn't happen with long range shooting....

I knew some people shot long distances, but had no idea that many people did. They had no problem admitting it either.

You were told wrong.
More wounding at longer ranges,
although fewer hunters may realize it.

Would be hard to know a pellet got embedded in a bird's gut,
but it would be expected to die within a few days.

I know, I posted about the wounded birds being eating by coyotes. That's when I was pretty much told I was wrong.

I don't know of this group or I'd really stir up some poop :rotf:

Just another example of the disease that's inefcting turkey hunting being spread by the new generation

Just make sights illegal. The older you get you should be able to get them in closer!

Wouldn't matter how close they are with my old eyes without sights. Lol the end of the barrel is just a big fuzzy blob. I don't think sights is the issue. People been shooting at turkeys too far forever.

Think one of the snipers has been found

Fine with me, I'll go back to a smooth barrel in a second if this happened.

Having older eyes, I do appreciate my optical sights.

However, I seriously believe those (like Setterman) who have learned how to call up turkeys without the use of decoys would kill every bit as many turkeys, since their average range is so close anyway. Personally, I've killed very few birds beyond 30 yards, so if I couldn't use optical sights, I'd probably just go to a common "modified" choke and never miss a beat.

If you really want to do something constructive to reduce the amount of long-range sniping and help the turkey population, I can think of nothing better than opening the season a week or two later and reducing the bag limit. There is much less opportunity for the longer-range shots once everything has grown up a lot more just after the 1st week of April.

Not sure why you would accuse me of being a sniper. I'm not the one using a sight or shooting TSS. My point is that hopefully the idiots that are taking these long shots would not be able to see at these extreme ranges. I'm 50 wear glasses and have for years.I will shoot out to 40 yards in the woods if necessary if that's to long of a shot than guess I am a sniper. I do not hunt fields at all.
