A friend of mine is looking at buying a Bushmaster Varminter it has a 24inch fluted barrel realling nice looking gun but they but they do not have a crome lined barrel. Every one I have talked to saids that if buying a ar still rifle make shure it has a crome lined barrel. My question is this what is the advantages of the crome linning. Thanks

Well.. If you get a Chrome lined barrel, alot of people say they aren't as accurate as non chrome.

One good reason to get the chrome lined barrel would be the durablity. They last longer.

I'm not sure if the fact you lose accuracy is enough to justify switching to a chrome lined barrel.. It really depends on how much you are going to shoot the gun.

The reason they originally chrome lined the barrels of this weapon was because of rust and the weapon jamming. The jungles of Vietnam was hard on the first M-16's with non chrome lined barrels. After they started building them with chrome lined bore and chambers jamming wasn't as much of a problem.

The Varminter is meant to be a precision rifle and not a battle rifle. If you clean the gun like you should a non chrome lined barrel will be fine. Plus the Varminter don't come with a Happy Switch. :D

I don't think it would make a difference for your average shooter who cleans on a regular, or at least a semi-regular basis.

I don't know why anybody would want one chromed...Chome is not very durable and it would seem to round out and soften up the edges and corners of the rifling in the barrel to me....

Chrome is very durable, and one of the most durable metals on earth. More durable than a plain steel barrel. Chrome lined barrels will add approx 10,000 more shots to your barrel if you take care of it and clean it regularly after shooting. People who live in humid areas, such as east TN or along the coast, will benefit from a chrome lined barrel because it resists rust significantly better than a steel barrel.

Your average hunter will not even know the difference in accuracy between a chrome lined barrel vs a conventional steel barrel.

Yessir!! I have fired both, well actually more...1:7 Chrome and not, 1:9 Chrome and not and at 500 meters I can not tell the difference, groups from both weapons are tight and get the job done!! Want one that will give you a different perspective get a 1:8 with no Chrome, that sucker will be more acurate than many handmade precision pieces once you find what it likes to eat. At 500 meters on a calm day and the right scope its just one big hole. I think twist rate has more to wearing a barrel over chrome or no chrome but (there is always a but) for the average shooter who does not put out thousands of rounds it would not be an issue. Think of Military weapons and how they are used...rifle ranges all year long, probably shot 280 to 300 days out of the year and 200 plus rounds a day, thats 56K on a slow year!! They very rarely need a new barrel due to wear over the course of a year or even their lifetime and they can punch the bullseye at 500 all day long. Clean them right after firing and they will last!!

Chromium (Cr) is a basic element that is electroplated to other metals for corrosion resistance.
