Went by Home DEpot,they had some new pear trees,Keifers,I got 2.They are pretty big,after plantingId say they are 91/2 foot tall at least.Pretty big aroud to.Big as the end of a pool cue

Yep, better cage them and also make a "tripod" of supports. Especially once the leaves start coming out and increases their wind resistance, all the new little rootlets that they will be putting out will get ripped loose when the wind blows and it will stunt or kill the tree.

wondering if that is related to the persimmon failure,around the Buffalo area.Most people I talked to said they were very few if any in that area,including Rmbbq.I wonder,with all the rain we had in the spring,could the pollen just have been washed out last year for many fruit trees.?

FH - I went to Home Depot today when I got off work to get some keys made (we put new locks on our gates for the loggers). I saw some fruit trees for sale there...Apple, pear, plum, peach for $26....Is that better than what you got yours for? I remember getting 3 apple trees last year for $40 a piece in Whites Creek. Should I get a few from Home Depot? They are about 4 ft....I was wanting to re-plant some.....since I didnt get around to put pipe and fence around the ones I put out last year...the bucks uprooted them and I found them on the edge of the fields :crazy:

26 bucks is a decent deal. Once spring hits they will go up . I think I spent 30 for some last year in the spring.

When growing conditions are excellent, some fruit trees will choose "growing larger" instead of producing fruit. Producing fruit requires a lot of energy and resources that do no benefit the tree in the long run, other than reproducing themselves and continuing the genetic line in the case of parent tree death.

When you consider the process from the angle of Natural Selection--those trees that live the longest and produce the most genetic offspring are selected for--it makes perfect sense. Grow large (to survive longer) when conditions for growth are best, while producing as many potential seeds when tree death is a greater possibility (when growing conditions are poor).

26 bucks is high. Even in the Spring most nurseries are going to be running around $20. There are places even quite a bit cheaper and of even better quality if you know where to look or of course if you graft then you might $2 in a tree

got ,mine for $19.98,something like that,they were p[riced at $21 something,but rang up cheaper! What a deal!

Like I said,I would go get em in McMinnville if I needed a bunch,but just 2 more is not worth the ride.Im planning on really taking care of them,mulch,water,spray,fertilize,I have about 30 now,about as many as I can handle I think.

Well you know, you gotta figure that if you get 30 producing trees then you are definitely going to have a ton of food available. Im worried alot of fruit on my place will rot since I have a ton of trees but few deer lol
