Confusing success this morning

anyone ever had a deer drop like it was spine shot, when it wasn't? I shot a doe with my bow this morning, I knew it was a good shot, but it rolled over and its arms started twitching like it was spine shot. I put another arrow in it to finish it off quicker, the 2nd arrow went into the sternum and pierced the ribcage that it was laying on. That is why there are 2 holes in the picture below. The one closest to the shoulder is the entrance wound from my Sevr 2.0. I'm stumped as to why it dropped like it was paralyzed.

No two shots are the same and no two deer are the same. Hard to say why she reacted that way. May have hit a nerve just right that caused a lot of pain.

I've seen spinal shock 2 or 3 times generally that us higher up then what that shot appears to be. As Ski said hit a nerve right or something of that nature.

Just a WAG on my part. Maybe you hit the vagus nerve. That's the nerve that causes those fainting goats to fall over. I think it's a factor also in the cases where a deer is shot, falls flat, appears dead, and suddenly jumps up and runs.

Note: I said, "I think...", so there may be a large possibility of being wrong.

I've seen spine shots that drop deer in their tracks by shooting them in the ribs by breaking a rib leading too the spine .

Ive dropped several shooting them like that with a bow, just caught the right nerve or broke a rib in away that it caught the nerve just right at the spine, either way congrats brother

That's a deer I shot with a longbow at 12 yards and I was shooting down hard at her. Absolutely amazed me when she dropped because I spined her. Had to shoot her again like you're describing. That why I have the xray picture. I started researching it and found that.

The "no man's land" high behind the shoulder where you always lose the deer with a bow. You're actually shooting over the spine and not touching any vitals.
