I'm on the quest to gear up my oldest. She is 8, 4 1/2 feet tall, roughly 75lbs. Looking for climbing stand suggestions. Am I overlooking things or is 18.5lbs. about the lightest I'm going to find out there? I'm afraid that stand will be to bulky to heavy for her to pack in and out. My stand/gear weigh in around 30lbs. that I pack in and out.

x-stand mini x I think weighs in at 9 lbs but I wouldn't put an 8 year old in it or any other climber for that matter but that's just my opinion and no offense meant. I think I was probably 13ish when I started climbing.

With that being said, if you think she is ready, just be sure she has a way to contact you if she finds herself hanging from the harness. Phone, 2 way radio etc.

With a child, anything can go wrong. With that being said, I am just looking for mobile setup options. Until she has a couple years under her belt, she would be within eyesight. After that, 2 way radio would probably be the best option as phone service can be sketchy.

JK, I wouldn't have put my daughter in a climbing stand at all when she was 8, and I stayed in ground blinds until she was 12 or so at that before taking her up in the double man ladder stands that I have set up for us to hunt together in. WAY too many things to go wrong with a grown man in a climber, let alone a little girl IMO. That just scares the gee willickers out of me thinking about it even.

All youth under the age of 10 must have an adult 21 or older who meets the hunter education requirements who can take immediate control of the youth's hunting weapon.

There may be an exemption on your own land, but, even there, it is in effect for the juvenile hunt. It would also be in effect for any other lands where an exemption to hunter ed requirements doesn't apply.

IMO, a climbing stand for someone that young isn't a good idea. Millions of deer were killed from the ground before the tree stand craze. A ground blind is probably a better idea.

Thanks scn. Obviously I have not read far into the regs as this is just becoming something of interest. I have a couple ground blinds and 1 two man ladder stand. I guess that'll be the setup for a couple more years.

Have you considered a saddle?

No, the only thing I really envisioned would have been a stand that has a bar in the front. Her being harnessed in, and going to around 10-12 feet. My parents didn't hunt and I started at age 17. So when and how to do things with kids will be a learning experience. But when scn mentioned that under 10 requires being in a position to take over immediately, it puts things back to the ground blind setup. I have a couple older blinds and will set them up Early/mid August. I just hate the one's I have as I'm 6'3" and with a chair things are definitely cramped.

You could easily be saddled in the same tree, or one saddle and a lock on, or a buddy stand.

I'm not certain a saddle would ever be a consideration for me. 2 knee surgeries really has slowed things down. I have a couple ground blinds in the garage, I'll set em up and save the 2 man for juvi. If she's ready we'll hunt there. Killed a 7pt out of it last fall on my first and only sit there.
