IMO you dont have to spend $1000 to get a good 1911, but you do have to spend more than $500. There are some good choices in the $700 to $800 range. Springfield Loaded series, S&W 1911, Ruger 1911, Sig 1911, and some Kimbers can be found in that range, if not new, slightly used. The other good thing about all of the listed pistols is that they all have upgraded sights, extended safeties, and beaver tail grip safeties.

Rock Island 1911's are IMO the best of the less expensive 1911's. They can still be found for $450-500. I have had one for several years and it has been flawless.

I have a Citadel 1911 .45 compact I picked up from a member here. It's a shooter. It's a little heavier than my Kimbers but still carries well. Also, I don't worry about scratching it, unlike the Kimbers.

The mags sucked so I bought a couple Kimber mags.
