Once I knock down a squirrel, I'll make a meat stick out of a thin branch. I sharpen one end and thread it through the foot of the squirrel.

How do you carry your squirrels?

I watched a Uncle come out of his vest real quick when a squirrel came back to life in his vest. If there is any doubt I step on the head and grab the back legs then give a quick jerk and break the neck. I've seen guys use a coat hanger. I've used a stick for fish.

I skin them on the spot and stick them in a game bag. They are much easier to skin while still warm.

Can't disagree with you there. I'm too eager to get another one when I'm in the field. I'll hose the squirrels down good before skinning. It seems to make it a bit easier.

Re: Carrying Squirrels

I use a metal fish stringer clamp on a carabiner. I just poke a hole through the squirrels foot and hang them from my belt or pack.

A lightweight "upland" game vest with a bloodproof game bag makes it very quick to deal with each squirrel you pick up, and easy to carry them. Or, sometimes I just use my turkey hunting vest.

Don't know why anyone wants to unnecessarily get blood on their clothes,
and sometimes the ticks on their bodies that crawl off the dead squirrels.

A couple tricks in warmer weather to keep the ticks off you:

1) Spray your game bag's interior with Permanone (Permethrin) tick spray, as it kills the ticks that crawl off the squirrels.

2) Simply carry a kitchen garbage bag in your game pouch, place the squirrels in that bag (in your pouch) ---- these keeps your game pouch cleaner.

I agree. I used the garbage bag in the back also. I use my upland game vest when squirrel hunting during deer muzzleloader and gun season because its orange. The rest of the time I use my turkey vest. I discovered years ago 10 squirrels fits much more comfortably in the larger pouches in them!

Same here! :)
If a few are fox squirrels, some "upland" or "dove" vests will in no way hold a limit of 10.

My Dad used to tie them to his belt, and I know that practice began simply because he never had any kind of "game vest" growing up during the Depression. I've tried it, but besides unnecessarily getting blood on one's pants, they swing and distract when I'm trying to move fast pursuing another squirrel --- carrying them in a vest works better for me.

Still nice at times to be a minimalist, just head into the woods with your gun and a minimal amount of clothes & gear. :)

I have a vest I use, but like you said it's nice to go into the woods with just a gun (especially after deer season).

Re: Carrying Squirrels

I agree. When I was a boy in KY. I would do my squirrels on a stick just like in your picture. I would head into the woods wearing my blue jeans and t-shirt with only my shotgun a pocket full of shells and a knife. Great times!

Re: Carrying Squirrels

Here's my fish stringer on a carabiner. I'll have some "in action" pictures after the Ohio muzzleloader season is over.

I would just put my squirrels in a vest, but I just don't like the idea of putting them in a a sealed bag that doesn't breath and help to cool them down. Alot of the time, I'll kill 3 or 4 in an area and then skin and gut them, put them in a piece of a game bag (Poser taught me this), and hang them from my pack to cool. I don't worry about getting blood on my clothes. They're going to be washed anyways.

Nice! I may give that a try.

Re: Carrying Squirrels

I use a game bag, but it's made of mesh, so there are lots of cool-down holes.
It also lets the blood drip out so I'm not dealing with a lot of mess while wandering through the woods.

Re: Carrying Squirrels

I am going to try that

Re: Carrying Squirrels

I usually use a hunting vest but when I was a kid I'd just stick their heads under my belt. I also used to do that with my rabbits. Get a mile off the road after a few good rains make the fields a sloppy mess and every step you take sinks you 6-8" in the mud. With 1/2 dozen big swampers tucked under your belt you'll wish your hunt hadn't been so successful.
