I must agree....never let a deer know you are there or even be suspitious....hearing a deer and not seeing one sets them on edge...calls rarely work for me...actually, maybe NEVER!!!

I do still carry one or two for those deer walking away...a last chance scenario, you understand..

I "always" carry a call or two with me. But sometimes silence is the best method. I didn't use a call yesterday morning when I killed my 8 point. I didn't need to as a hot doe brought him into M/L range. You can bet that if he had turned to go in the opposite direction or if he was out of range I would of tried calling to him though.
One thing I have found [IMO] a buck already with a hot doe is not going to respond to any amount of calling you do. He doesn't have to, he's already found what he wants.
On a side note, I was hunting with my wife this morning and we heard somthing walking around in a thicket about 100 yds down in a steep holler. It apparently wasn't going to come our way so I gave a few soft grunts, the sound immediatly got closer and closer. My heart was beating out of my chest as I thought the wife was going to get a shot. Finally the "noise" popped over the ridge and it was a couple of hen turkeys, you beleivin that? Oh well, we got a good laugh out of it anyway.

I agree mostly.I do doe bleat when the action is really slow.My biggest problem with calls is that it will attract deer but useally they will circle downwind to locate the source of the call. And thats never good.

yep

Prime example....had two bucks at 100 yards turning away from me. I let out two soft grunts and they bolted off. What a joke

actually, this may be a sure sign that a more dominant buck is in the area.......

I'd like to add that deer are individuals, just like humans...

Sure they all have similar traits and reactions to certain sti,uli but some do indeed react differently....

For example, just for giggles I broke in to a fight scene scnario while sitting on a big field many years ago...I let a rattle bag have it and shook some tree limbs and really made some awful racket......I did that about three times in a period of about 30 minutes. During the final sequence a tiny little spike came charging out of the woods down the field, turned and charged right up to where I was hiding....his back all bristled up like he was going to join in the fray...lol.

Once he couldn't find another deer , he blew and ran off...

That's the only time a buck has ever done that with me.....

I will also say that I have only heard deer bleat once in my life....small grunts are more frequent but only while chasing...

I say, if it makes you more confident to call or gives you something to do , then by all means, have at it....Just don't place too much confidence in it....Put more effort in finding the best location.....and wait!
