I read this statement in another post today and didn't want to hijack it.

if a person is proud of a deer, it doesn't really matter what the score, weight, or age of the deer is. Some of the happiest hunters are the guys with their first bucks that are spikes or four points.
I'm so glad to see that there is still someone out there that "get's it" and doesn't want to turn hunting into something that I despise. It seems that every other post is about some contest, or who can kill the first, or who can kill the one with the most inches of antlers.

It's definitely a breath of fresh air to know that people like deaddownwind are out there.

Yep it's about hunting what makes you happy, whether that be shooting a fawn for the meat or passing up a 120" 10 point for next year

I have killed my fair share of small bucks/does.

Every single one was a trophy in my eyes :tu:

they all tasted wonderful :super: kill what makes you happy.

People turn a fun and relaxing sport into a way to keep score! Most of us hunt to get away from stress not to create it.

True dat. I all but quit duck hunting (not that I was ever really big into it) because it became a contest amongst most of the people I hunted with. There are a few hunters that "get it" and invite me to tag along, when I do it is a blast and rarely do I fire a shot.

If deer hunting ever becomes totally engulfed in that mentality then all hope is lost.

agreed.

as long as the hunter shows respect for the animal killed, it's all ok in my book. Part of being respectful is also being proud of the animal killed. God gave us dominion over the animals on Earth to use for our benefit, but not to be abused.

I thank the same.

I'm with you. It gets old to see people age this or mature that or number class. I despise what deer hunting has evolved to for some. As happy Gilmore said "Gold jacket, green jacket who gives a flip".

A few years ago I needed meat for the freezer and I had not seen a big buck all year. I went hunting with a plan to take the first buck I saw. A chunky 2.5 year old 4 pt. stepped out and was dropped in his tracks, I took the opportunity to learn how to properly prepare, butcher and age meat. I learned a great deal and that was far and away the best meat ever, No regrets.
