So with the price of meat sky high I ran some numbers on what my buck would cost if compared to beef. So after processing him this morning here is the value of venison if we compare it the same cuts as beef.
2 packs of stew meat. 2 pounds each at $17
2 -6 pound roast at $60 a roast
30 - pounds of ground meat at $10 a pound- organic lean ground price
17+17+60+60+300= $454 market price of beef. The reason I compare venison to beef as it will be substituted for beef in our meals. I didn't add the back strap and tenderloin because we are eating the last of it today but it would be safe to say this buck saved us from buying $500 worth of beef. I think I'll try and shoot another.

But dont add in what it cost you to get it, you will be disappointed! I could by a whole lot of beef for what i spend on deer hunting 😂

Yeah. I process my own. But, if I factor in the cost of license, leases, guns, optics, ammo, bows, arrows, broadheads, four wheelers, camo, fuel, time when I could be doing something paying…you just gotta like doing it. Cause I'd DEFINITELY be money ahead to buy a beef and quit hunting! 😂

I pay to have my deer processed. On a 90lbs hanging carcass I got 43lbs of meat back. Thats after skinning and head and feet cut off. If I figure just the cost of the processing fee its $2.55/lb.

Yea, but our equipment gets amortized throughout the time we use it. So a rifle used a few seasons across however number of deer you get brings that down quite a bit. Now, if you are constantly buying new equipment, well, yea, pretty expensive table fare. This year I got a new to me Bergara B14, so that will skew my numbers, but had I not done so, I could have gotten away with paying just for fuel, and that is only a 30-45 minute ride to my place, so pretty good return on investment (ROI) if you ask me.

Oh, and in case anyone is wondering, I did get the clip on with the rifle. 🤣🤣

So let's do that. I'm using the same old rifle I've been using for several seasons. Same old camo, 3+ years old, Ammo I bought back in 2020. Knife I won from Shag on this site. Even my processing equipment is several years old and I'm hunting public land. So besides the gas I used to make the 7 minute drive to my parking spot the only thing I really bought for deer hunting this year was a sportsman license. I would like to know what some of you spend on deer hunting a year?

Between me, my wife, and my son, i definitely do NOT want to know!!!! I buy way to many new toys that are way to expensive, but i enjoy every dang bit of it😂

I'd guess several hundred dollars if not a thousand. Property tax last year went up, don't recall off the top of my head. Other than that diesel, gas, fertilizer and lime, herbicides, new chains for pole saw and chainsaw, bought one new stand on clearance.

Hard to separate actual cost though because we do also raise cows and some of the expense is shared.

Im afraid to admit what I spend. Probably much less than others, and more than id like to admit. And in fairness, this is a hobby I love to do. The meat is a total bonus.

I've been hunting a while. So what I tend to buy these days are upgrades to old outdated equipment . Most of the stuff I buy is not because I need it. It's more because I want it. Lol.

Someone new to hunting... easily could drop a minimum of $2k for new equipment. Stand, gun, bow, bullets, arrows and accessories. That's keeping equipment on the low end. A new bow hunter could drop $3K on a top end bow + accessories alone

If I were to monetarily justify everything, then I wouldn't be married. Prostitutes are cheaper. Fact is some things are worth more than money. A good wife and hunting are two of them. Whatever it costs is whatever it costs. There's a reason money is called currency. It comes and goes in a flow water down a stream.

Oh no, ask anyone, the cost of living is coming down. 🤣
You are correct, get another.

It's hard to put a price on something you enjoy. I started this post just to kinda show those that are feeling the financial pinch this year with their grocery bill that there's a way to offset the cost of meat. If your spending 1000s of Dollars every year to hunt you probably don't need to worry financially. I don't have to worry about it myself but we really like offsetting the cost of our groceries and it was interesting to put a financial figure on my venison.

Grocery shopping for lean red meat in the woods is therapy. Sure, it might cost a couple tanks of gas, box of ammo and a cup of coffee but I'm pretty confident that's much cheaper than an appointment with a therapist and much healthier than any drug they'd prescribed.

We raised cattle growing up and if I put three deer in the freezer that was a steer I could sell not put down. Hunting can be expensive especially if you are one that has to upgrade every year. Cattle and farming is expensive too…. Hard to put a price on getting out for a morning after a long week of the crap most of us put up with dealing with what our jobs dump on us from time to time. So for those that are frugal hunters it starts to pay off after a few years. I mean I have killed the last three deer with the same bolt and broadhead ( just new blades).
