On a boat with an enclosed fuel tank you are required to have a fire extinguisher on board. My question is , is it required to be attached out in the open or can it be in a compartment?

I am assuming that my 21 gal tank that is in the rear compartment and fastened to boat falls into this category as being enclosed.

I'm required by law to have a fire ext. But I'm sitting beside 25 gal. of fuel. If I've got a fire, probably gonna go overboard and swim for it. LOL

A fire extinguisher should also be stored in an area away from the fuel tank. You would e surprised at the number of people that have the extinguisher stored in the same compartment as the fuel tank.

Also make sure you don't have a side post battery. I worked a boat fire several years ago where the tank came in contact with a side post battery. It didn't take long for the fire to burn everything to water level.
