Ive got a 2001 mercury 50 horse. Boat will sit and idle fine amd rev up in neutral. Put it under load and it just will not come up on plane. It wont bog and cut off though. It just hums along dredging at probably 2500 rpms. What could it be? Cylinder down? High stator gone bad?

I had one do same thing. After checking all firing, carbs and gas I sold it. Next guy took lower unit off and the exhaust was 90% blocked. Carbon buildup with only a hole about the size of a pencil would not let it run full throtle.

My 115 did something like that. I had to keep pushin in the choke to get it to plain out. I got home and hooked the hose up to it and sprayed carb cleaner in the carbs and it was good as new.

Matt, if that doesn't fix it, here is a place to ask the question.

There is a guy on there called wrechin2 (James Perry)that is a Mercury guru. Ask your question on there and I will PM him and make sure he sees it. He is the guy that builds the really fast Mercury upgrades and fixes blown motors. He lives in Dunlap. He rebuilt my blown motor a few years ago.

I had the same symptons with a mercury 115. Turned out to be the stator. Took it to 2 different mechanics that both rebuilt my carbs for $120 a pop. Finally took it to another who replaced the stator and fixed it.

I bought my 40 horse evinrude lakeflite from an old guy who lived up the street. Took it out and it would not fall out of a tree. Ran but ran slow and wanted to die under low throttle. Took it home and put muff on it. worked two days on it and pulled a lot of stuff out of the way and found screw that holds linkage to upper carb had fallen out. I even replaced the impeller on the water pump tryin to fix the problem. I knew nuffin about that motor when I started but I know it inside out now. My suggestion is just keep playin with it.

Sounds like your advanced timing arm has come loose. Look over the motor good to make sure everthings connected. If so make sure your fuel hoses arent sucking air.
