I've been down in my back since the day before deer season began,9-27-13 and had back surgery last week,10-30-13. This is the first deer season I've missed in 35 years and the first season not hunting with my daughter in 8 years. :(
But...enough of the sob story. :)

Everyone knows that has owned/ shot muzzle loaders that pyrodex is not user friendly, cleaning or reloading. So yesterday I picked up a jug of BigHorn 209.
Since I won't be there to reload for her as I always have, from what I've read it will be a lot easier for her to reload because of the reduced fouling.

So at what grain would you recommend starting?
She shoots a CVA optima pro with Hornady sst 250 grain.

She only has from 4:pm till dark this evening to get it sighted in, so thanks in advance for your help. ;)

Re: BH 209 advocates & users....

I didn't notice a big difference in recoil at 100 and 110 (volume). Either way, it kicks hard enough! I did get a little better grouping at 110 though (Omega Z5 with Hornady 300g SST sabot).

Re: BH 209 advocates & users....

Thanks.

I've made up three 90gr speed loaders to start and I've cleaned out all the carbon buildup from the breech plug.

Re: BH 209 advocates & users....

I have my wife's shooting 80 grains of BH209 with a 245 grain power belt and it dropping one on top of another at 100 yards with light recoil.

I'll load up three at 80 also...thanks

90-110 grains Blackhorn209 with federal 209a or cci 209 magnum primers.

My bet is you will be needing your breech plug modified.

Her optima pro is the first model that came out, however many years that has been. It has the 29" barrel.
I modified the breech plug this morning.
Flash channel is now 5/32
Flash hole is now .035

Thanks for the info guys. ;)

We didn't have time to try every load suggested. But we started and ended with 80 gr. It was shooting less than 2" group right out of the gate. So we stayed with it and adjusted the scope to the holes.
If she has a deer within a 100 yds...it will die. :)

Btw...that powder is awesome! Should've changed a long time ago, instead of waiting on back surgery.

Re: BH 209 advocates & users....

Just got a text from a buddy that's hunting close to my daughter,Alexis this morning. It said," your daughter has already shot twice."

She just called me and said she has 2 deer on the ground and is reloaded.
That's my girl! :D

Re: BH 209 advocates & users....

I sent Alexis a text asking if Buzz & Stump had came to help her yet and this is her reply and I quote: " Well I'm still hunting, reloaded, and ready to fire. So I don't care how long they take. I've got more killing to do."

I've created a monster! :)

Re: BH 209 advocates & users....

Flipper that is awesome! The BH 209 is the real deal. I'm with you I should have switched as soon as it came to market.

Re: BH 209 advocates & users....

I finally got pics to go with these stories posted in general forum under "Extraordinary Daughter."
With help from RUGER.

I shoot a Optima v2. After messing I settled on 95gn by volume, seems to work real well. I weight all my loads by weight, which is 66.5gn. I shoot the 250 grain Barnes T-ez.

Re: BH 209 advocates & users....

I have a TC Bone Collector and it shoots really well with 110 grains pushing a Barnes 250gr Spitfire TMZ.
