Quick question. What velocity are these flying at? I'm working up a load with XTPs for my 357 and i'm curious on the terminal performance.

I will agree that the bullet and the shooter (you) did a fine job, congrats!

Impact velocity defines a bullet.

100 bullets, 100 velocities, 100 answers....

i agree and if your throwing your rock faster, say 2000 fps+ try the 300gr xtp mag.

What if you expect 3,000?

(hint: see above)

ewc,
you're right on the dot. (i think we've spoke about this before ) different bullets work better at different impact speeds. i like using sierra gold dots too for my 1400ish fps set up.

if you're expecting 2300+ with a 300 grainer i would start looking into rifle bullets and say "why that's a monster of a smoke pole you have there. Might want to check out a nice recoil pad located over in the you're nuts isle at the local gun shop".

3000+ reverts back to patch and round ball. :D don't forget you're eye protection! (really don't try that)

I use the 300 XTP in my Savage at about 2100 to 2200 fps. Works wonders on deer from 50 to 200 yards. I try not to shoot anything closer to avoid bullet failure. Agree 100 percent that the impact velocity is what you should be aiming for not the muzzle velocity. It's a fine bullet and if your on a budget, it's the best thing since sliced bread.

I use the 240 gr .44 cal XTP and it kills deer dead. I found this one just under the skin in the buck I killed yesterday.I have only recovered two of them.

the xtp's always perform great in the regular mz but since the savage it seems the non mag is little less than needed.
i have killed 1 deer with it and it seperated the jacket from the bullet and i never found but small frags of the bullet.
i switched to the barnes 457010 in 300gr. will have to wait and see what it does....

Are there any degrees of death? Like with x bullet the deer is only a little dead, but with y bullet its graveyard dead? Point being that unless the bullet explodes on impact and does not penetrate, isn't the end result with any jacketed bullet of reasonable weight going at a reasonable velocity the same, regardless of brand?

I agree completely. All I know I'm saying is the XTP I use is Centerfire accurate and kills every I hit dead, more than a little. It works for me. YMMV.

The xtp is a great bullet. I have killed 20+ deer with a couple versions.

However, I had a failure with that bullet at an impact of 2,600+.

The deer died. Entrance was a volleyball and no exit.

As I stated earlier, define your impact velocity (or get close) and pick a bullet.

I have two options: 1) .400" 195 gr Barnes 2) .400" 200 gr Hornady SST

At close range, my impact is better than 2,900 fps.

I choose the Barnes 9 times out of 10- even though the sst is a 1/2" more accurate.

Why? Because I defined my shot before I loaded the gun.

Go to west tn and shoot/impact over 200 yards? - sst.
