Just finished up this deer today. He is a late October buck with a gorgeous cape and sweet rack.

If I remember the story correctly; the hunters that brought him to me shot him on a Saturday morning but lost trail of him by mid morning. They called in a dog from KY and later that afternoon they started tracking, the dog was on the trail for a couple miles and looped back around to the same general area the deer was shot in. The dog kept going to the river bank but they couldn't find anything (no blood, tracks, nothing). The gave up later that evening, thinking that the deer lived. Well as most responsible hunters would do that gave it one more try on Sunday after church. They got in a boat to drive up and down the river looking on the banks to see if they could find any type of sign. When they got to their property and the same general spot the dog kept pointing to they noticed something in a brush top. It was the buck! That dog was spot on but they couldnt see the deer from the bank. I was a little nervous that the cape was no good but actually the river was its saving grace, it kept it cool enough to no spoil.

Tall brow tines.

Notice the drop on the end of his main beam.

This deer carried his mass all the way to his tips.

Beautiful mount and awesome buck.

The eyes tell it all. I have seen mounts with sleepy looking eye, cross eyes and even eyes pointing in different directions.

This ones eyes look like. "What the hell you doing here." I like it.

A reminder not to give up after the first day when tracking. Great looking mount

Great buck and great taxidermy work, congrats to you and them. As MB stated above, a deer mount is only as good as it's eyes, and you nailed them with this buck. I am a taxidermy critic and you do fine work, thanks for sharing. His cape looks good considering how the events unfolded, do you tan the hides or send them off?

Thanks everyone!

Gorgeous buck. Is taxidermy your full time job or something you do on the side?
I would like to but it is a very cut throat business. You can consider it my seasonal part time job.

You can barely tell by the picture but I gave him a slight right turn eye rotation and rotated his left ear forward a bit to give a similar look of what you described.

I do both depending on work load. Busy season I will send a lot off to get tanned because I run out of freezer space.

Right! Beautiful buck! And beautiful work! Curious here...what do you charge for a mount like that?

Thanks!

That mount is a standard shoulder mount, nothing special except the eye rotation which you cant see to well in the picture. What makes it special is the cape is in excellent condition, no scars, no missing hair, no holes, etc. Its rare to get a deer that "clean" with a good coat of mid season hair. Plus the size fits my favorite form to use and the Ohio Taxidermy form is top notch and has one of the more anatomically accurate faces of any form made.

I will PM you more info.

Do you know what he scored?

He is a low 140's deer, his width and beam length are a bit on the short side. His mass is awesome though. A good solid buck for sure, one I would kill in a heart beat given the chance.

Oh I'd love to let the string go on a bruiser like that!!!
