No malicious intent here...just a question.
I'm not familiar with larger motors, but that (being black) looks to be a Merc. This is purely an assumption, it may be something else. Dunno. That said, why does it have a different color lower unit on it? Is this common on these motors... whatever it is?

No clue why but yes, most of the newer ones I see are like that.

Any updates on the guy's condition? This is all I could find:

Two weeks ago, Cody Liddle was fishing on Old Hickory Lake when his boat hit something in the water and his motor flipped onboard. Since then, Cody has returned home, where he's beginning his long load to recovery.

They try to make these motors lighter using crappy materials, If the motor mount was made out of machined aluminum instead of cast junk from China or Mexico this would have never happened. When something like this happens you will find the weak link.

I agree with you to a point but when a 2500 lb boat hits a stationary object at 70 mph something is going to give.

I think someone should be able to create and sell a more affordable version of something that should work. Something so simple that can save your life shouldn't be so expensive.

I agree. A simple chain or cable bolted to the motor and the boat. But I'm no engineer.
