I'm rarely in the neighborhood, but I had an appointment very close to this place today, so I decided to give it a whirl. Tom's is famous for their rib tips, which I've never had before, and after seeing it on "Triple D", I knew one day I'd stop in. Rib tips were interesting to eat, and Tom's makes a pretty tasty batch. They're not all that appealing looking, but still a good meal. At $10 for tips, 2 sides, and a drink, it's on the average scale of BBQ joints in Memphis.
The meat had some pretty intense flavor. He seasons them pretty handily, and since there's not a lot of meat on the quarter-sized bones, the smoke permeates pretty well. They put my sauce in a cup, since I had to take it with me. It was pretty different from what I'm used to. It was runny instead of thick, and a relatively strong vinegar taste. I imagine it's probably their mop sauce, simmered down just a tad. Potato salad tasted out of a bucket, but not a bad one. A little too sweet of a wang for my taste, but not bad. Slaw looked homemade, but I couldn't say for certain. TOo mayonnaisey for my taste, but I was there for the rib tips and something I could eat quickly.
Overall, I'd eat there again with no reservations.
Here's the place, at the northwest corner of Raines and Getwell. The parking lot was full. The place looked recently renovated, as I would imagine their business picked up after an appearance on Guy Fieri's "Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives" show.
The only thing I had a chance to take a picture of in the restaurant. I had grease on my hands and needed to wash up....plus, I was in a hurry.
This is the plate. Sorry for the poor quality, as I was eating in my truck and trying to make an appointment.
